Ringed with two, as I recall, big bunkers. When we played the hole was in the front. Second and third shots played from the sand. Holed the sand shot, thank God.

Funny, but I was 3/3 making par on #6.  I found 2 and 10 to be much more difficult with the fall offs both sides.  On #6 I could hit a little fade at the left edge and there was a lot of room.  Not so on those other two.

#2 & #6 are similar in that both greens are open in front and you can run the ball on (or choose to play short and chip/putt your 2nd shot on to the green).

With #10, you have to land your tee shotl on the green on the fly (and get it to hold ).

I find the 2nd the toughest as it comes so early in the round and the green really sits up. Six has the bank on the left which, although only visual makes that side of the green seem less intimidating. The 10th is only really tough downwind when it is a real challenge to hold the green.

Aye but there's the rub........you have to hit the shot straight too!

And when you inevitably do miss sideways - on 10 - you have to pitch off turf as tight as Astroturf^TM up onto a tiny green as firm as a pool table.   I found 10 much tougher than 2.   Don't ask.

Yes, there is a stand of 2 or 3 pine trees behind the 10th green. Those are the only trees on the course.

Yes I recall ,played it 10 years ago but also had an eye on the distillery across the Firth. Had a great time there too. Great golf and wonderful free scotch plus a complete tour of the entire process.  Got to go back soon.

The par 3's at Dornoch are so challenging at not one is over 180 yards.
The up and down from the right of the 10th is the hardest up and down on the course IMHO.  It is a much more delicate shot than the 2nd and with the green running away and the slope is not shaved so the putter is not an option, very tough.  Last summer I hit every club between wedge and 3 wood from the 10 of the 10th.  I held the green with a 3 wood into a gale and couldn't hold it with a wedge downwind, a great hole.

I'll second what Stan says. Although on a normal breezy day it is the easiest of the par 3s to hit down wind it has to be the hardest. Also, if you miss the green it is a very delicate chip. I might be the only one who thinks this but I would prefer the hole if the front bunker was a dip, Valley of Sin style as it would make the front pin placements more enticing rather than just damn hard.

Speaking as a chip and putt merchant no. 2 is by far the hardest since the other two generally present easier recovery shots when I've successfully missed the green like I normally do. I've played any number of holes similar to 10 and several similar to 6 but can't think of any similar to no. 2 with its steep drop off either side and run up in front. All very good holes but no. 2 the pick of the three not only for difficulty but also for its unique design IMHO.

the old 4th at Howley Hall near Leeds made the 2nd at Dornoch look like a football field in size. For better or worse they have now altered it and it is but a shadow of its former self
