Which #3 is he referring to? The 3rd hole as it's played today, or as when the course originally opened...ie #12?

I'd guess Mack was talking about the current 3rd.

Interesting bit of history about the hole. Roberts disliked it from the get-go and wanted to change it early on. MacK, just before his death, strongly defended the 3rd. He objected to any change to it in a letter to Jones, as I recall. None were made.

Sand Hills #14 is the best short par-5 I've seen. I don't know if a perfect golf hole is really possible, but this one is darned close.

Terrific choice!

There is hope for you afterall.   ;)

This is true. Roberts wanted to place a cross bunker in front of the green, but Mac and Jones were strongly against it, stating that the bunker would ruin all the hard work and time they had placed into creating the slopes and movement presented in the hole.

I'd love to hear people's take as to why 16 at Bandon Dunes is not a perfect golf hole.

I'm shocked that no one has said this yet, so I will. THERE WILL NEVER BE A PERFECT GOLF HOLE.

Only because it can't be defined and agreed upon by all...

Would have been interested to see your take on the hole before it was altered, when there was no room left...Honestly I think it went from a not so good hole to a great one when they changed it.

However, some would say there is a perfect woman for every man.

I think this also applies to golf holes. Some love certain holes while others hate (can't stand) them.

I like the woman/golf hole metaphor.

Each one requires different strategy on how to handle.
Some are fun to play, while others are a bitch.
Depending on the day (weather) some are harder or easier to handle than usually.

Excellent post although shouldn`t you be in a production meeting with your writers from the Daily Show?

Pennard's 7th is as close as I can think of as perfect.

Swinley's 4th is the definition of sublime.

I would go for one that most people won't know and that is the 16th at Fixby, Huddersfield. I cannot put a finger on exactly why but it always struck me as a hole that was just right. Dean Stokes might beable to add something to this as he was a member there for many years.
