I grew up practicing on that hole. That would be the Tuft's house beyond the green. 40 yards behind the practice tee is the 9th green on a course called Pinehurst No. 2.
The road was not there when I was a kid. They put that in for the houses on No. 7 Course.
The area where No. 7 was subsequently built was just an overgrown area when I was young. As children we would play out there - and occasionally stumble across bunkers which were left over from the ancient employees course.
When people play No. 7 they are puzzled as to why there are bunkers on one of the tee boxes. It's because when they built the course they thought it would be amusing to keep a few of those remnants around.
