I think Pat cancelled/postponed his event.  George, I am doubtful again.  Spending the better part of that week in Cambridge for the young one's law school graduation.  don't think I can take the time away.

You're correct, Pat has cancelled his get-together... missed that one. Thanks!

I want to play.  But as a new member here I have a few questions.

1.  Is this a team event?

2.  If so, are we assigned randomly?

3.  Are there flights or do we just play our handicap?

4.  Do I have to rope a buddy in if this is teams?

5.  Is there a deposit and where do I send it?

George,

I'm in...thanks again for all of your work putting it together.

John M.,

A few quick responses to your questions...

I want to play.  But as a new member here I have a few questions.

1.  Is this a team event?

Saturday matches are 2 man better ball, and Sunday matches are either 2 man alternate shot or singles depending on your preference and how the team numbers shake out.

2.  If so, are we assigned randomly?

Yes, the captains put together the pairings and I believe they are fairly random.

3.  Are there flights or do we just play our handicap?

No flights. The use of strokes is up to each individual group. Some play straight up and some apply handicaps...usually just taken care of on the first tee.

4.  Do I have to rope a buddy in if this is teams?

Nope, the captains will pair you up. I'm sure you can let them know if you have a preference of who you'd like to play with.

5.  Is there a deposit and where do I send it?

I'll let George confirm this, but by reading the opening I doubt there will be one. We didn't have a deposit last year...

6.  How many times can I mention that my all time favorite Domer coach is Jerry Faust before I get punched in the head?  38?

Thanks for the info.  Ill be there.

Would love to make appearance #3 in this event, but we should have a 10-day-old daughter by May 20th!

Hopefully I can make a comeback in 2013.

I'm definitely in. I'm also happy to set up a round at South Bend CC before or after our rounds at Warren, if anyone is interested.

I'd very much like to play in this year's Midwest Mashie, if there is room for me.  I'm excited about the venue, not only because I'm an ND grad, but also because the golf course is lots of fun.

As already mentioned in earlier posts, graduation weekend will make hotels a challenge.  If anyone is unfamiliar with the area, please feel free to contact me for thoughts on places to stay.  I am thinking I will stay up in Benton Harbor (~30 miles north), and perhaps even squeeze in a round up there.

Looking forward to my first official gca event.

George and Steve,
Just wondering with all of this talk of graduation, is there going to be a problem with getting tee times? If we're going to play foursomes on Sunday we certainly don't want to be going off behind a bunch of groups playing four balls. . . that would be like Brandt Snedeker being stuck behind Ben Crane.

Mark - we're all set on tee-times.  We can go off as early as we want on Sunday, although that would need to be decided sooner rather than later.  I currently have tee-times starting at 8:30 on Sunday am, but I can move them earlier.

Hello boys,

I had some time to do a little hotel reconnaissance for the Mashie and it is going to be tough to get rooms in South Bend. I called all of the usual suspects (Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn, Fairfield Inn, etc...) and nearly everyone is sold out for graduation weekend.

In nearby Mishawaka (about 4 miles from the course) there is a Courtyard by Marriott with availability. Rooms with 2 double beds are running $129.95/night. There is also a Country Inn and Suites in Mishawaka with studio suites (that include a pull out couch) starting at $215/night. The only other option I found with any availability are the two Motel 6s in the area. They have rooms with 2 doubles for around $60/night.

Needless to say, the pickings are pretty slim, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up. There are some options, but you probably want to take care of it ASAP. For me, I'll probably drive in both days from the Chicago burbs, or pitch a tent down by the stream on the 18th...they won't mind I'm sure. Take care...

I'm flopping at a friend's place in Union Pier, MI which mapquest tells me is 38 minutes away.  I know there is a casino in New Buffalo and one in Michigan City, IN.  There are various hotels, b and bs in "Harbor Country" so that could work too.  It is better than driving to and fro from Chicago.

I rent a house for the family in Union Pier for a week every summer so maybe a few guys can rent a house/condo that way?  A lot of places have minimum stays, though.

John's idea is worth looking into. With the right number of people, you can sometimes find a reasonably priced rental that will be within a few minutes drive from Warren.

gamedayhousing.com and rentlikeachampion.com are a good place to look.

That Courtyard by Marriott in Mishawaka is close to the course and right near a bunch of restaurants as well.

The Motel 6 down in Mishawaka (about 15 minutes from the course) has rooms with an internet rate of $42 a night for two double beds...that is a great bargain!

I think I'll book a room there for both Friday and Saturday nights.  Anyone interested in splitting a room?  I am a non-snorer.

You might want to check out the reviews on Google for that Motel 6 (on second thought, you might want to avoid the reviews on Google for that Motel 6).

Brian,

I can't imagine why you'd be concerned about a review that includes the following statements:

"Management is a joke and refused refund saying that they have people who come and go after only an hour all the time because they use the rooms to do things that are better left unsaid...I figured that out as I was leaving and saw a man in a leather mask walking down a hallway. Disqusting and terrifying. "

I'm sorry I mentioned their availability in a previous post...I hereby absolve myself of any responsibility for any ill or otherwise unfortunate circumstance that should befall any Mashie attendee that seeks temporary residence at the aforementioned establishment.

I read that as well...but many times people over exaggerate their distaste for a property.  I travel a lot, and am not too worried about spending just a few hours sleeping at a place as the rest of the time the group will be someplace together.  Would rather save the $$$...but that is just me.

After such at good time at the Boomerang last year and Ballyneal before that....my New Year's Resolution was to make an effort to get in on another GCA event.  This timing is not great but I am not afraid to drop the hammer if the new job comes through.

George - what is the deadline for reserving a spot? Unfortunately I would not know until April. :(

Since Warren is close to the toll-road, you guys could conceivably go east/west and look for hotels near the various exits. Those would be pretty quick trips back to the course all things considered. Elkhart's exits wouldn't be that far away. Niles, Michigan is just across the border, although I can't say that I've ever paid that much attention to hotels up there.
