3rd Annual Midwest Mashie - CANCELLED
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:32:59 PM »
Gentlemen and Scholars (both used loosely),

Many apologies for my delayed post about the 3rd Annual Midwest Mashie.  We had quite the tumultuous time securing a venue (thanks to Steve Salmen for all the help).  However, we have our battlefield; hopefully everyone will enjoy.

Last year’s event at Lawsonia was a blast and the old girl successfully charmed our entire group.  We might have to think about instituting a 5-year rotational inclusion for the Links Course  ;)

Of course, we will be playing for the hickory shaft mashie which serves as our trophy and is currently sitting in my living room (for the second straight year!).

The plan is as follows:

Where: The Warren Course at Notre Dame – South Bend, IN

When: May 19-20th

Golf:
1st round Saturday May 19th (afternoon tee-times) - Best Ball teams
2nd round Sunday May 20th (morning tee-times) - Alternate Shot or Singles

Dinner: Saturday evening in the club house

Cost - Golf:  $110 per man - this includes two rounds of golf w/ cart and range balls.  $75 for walkers.

Cost – Dinner: TBD

**Lodging will not be provided – booking early is highly recommended**

We're looking at around 40 guys this year, give or take.  I’ll start the sign-up process now, so just let me know if you would like to join.

I don’t have any pictures of the course, so feel free to post some on this thread to whet our appetite.

Should be a fun event.  I’m looking forward to it!

Cheers,

George

George --

Wish I could make it -- but I'll be spending the PREVIOUS week in Indiana (at daughter's NCAA Division 3 championships) and can't manage two straight Hoosier weekends.

I vote Yea on making Lawsonia a regular stop on the Midwest Mashie rota.

And, if I may: For the 4th Annual Midwest Mashie, I propose The Brauer Trail in Northern Minnesota: Giants Ridge Legend, Giants Ridge Quarry, Wilderness at Fortune Bay (chronological order).

There might be a fourth Brauer (renovation) up that way by then, too. And there's always the possibility, if we behave ourselves, of Northland CC.

Might need to be a three-day weekend.

Have fun in South Bend.

Dan, it's the MIDWEST not NORTHWOODS Mashie. No Mashie-jacking. ;D

George:

I was hopeful when I saw your post that I could attend again this year and even the score on our captaincies; I haven't seen The Warren Course since I saw it with Bill Coore during construction.

Alas, I've committed to being at the C. B. Macdonald Cup [at Old Macdonald!] for the same dates.  Hope to see you in 2013.

P.S.  Suggestions for future sites:  Erin Hills, Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run, Cog Hill, Harrison Hills, Urbana CC [where Pete Dye grew up]. Maybe I could convince Blue Mound to host it one year.  I don't think Chicago Golf Club would do it, though.

For some reason, the last two years my office has decided to schedule our annual training to begin the same weekend as the Mashie.  I'm very tentative for the whole weekend.  I'm a better bet for Saturday than Sunday.  The weekend before or after would have been perfect.

Ha, ha.

That is the first time in history that Minnesota has been excluded from the "Midwest" -- which, I guess, starts just west of Philly and extends to ... hmmm ... Green Lake, Wisconsin?

The Domers are having graduation that weekend so get your hotels asap.

In.  I have yet to make it out there so I'm pumped to finally see the course.  That and seeing the usual incorrigibles..

The Super 8 is getting over a $150 that weekend, must be one helluva Super 8.

South Bend hotels raise the rates significantly when ND has events going on. If graduation is $150, then home football games are probably $250 with 2-night minimums!

If its graduation weekend for ND, getting a little farther away from campus might lower the rates to normal levels.

Dan - sorry to hear that!  You'll be missed.

And I'm always up for recommendations for future Mashies!

Tom – you’ll be missed as well!  I know you’ve been itching to get your hands on that old mashie ever since laying eyes on her at Lost Dunes a couple years ago…

It doesn’t sound like your prior obligation will be too much of a drag.

Thanks for the ideas; I might take you up on your Blue Mound offer one of these years!

I think Pat cancelled/postponed his event.  George, I am doubtful again.  Spending the better part of that week in Cambridge for the young one's law school graduation.  don't think I can take the time away.

George -

Please count me "in" for now.

I have a biz trip to Europe the following week that may have to cut into the Mashie weekend.  Will know for sure in the next week and can confirm or drop out.

Many thanks again for organizing!

Best, Andrew
