I'm in, thanks Ron for putting this together. Handicapping the WGC is tougher than nailing a perfect March Madness bracket.

Should be interesting to see who wins the first annual GCA MATCH MADNESS !!!

The addled mind of your underworked Commish (or maybe it was the boyish anticipation) convinced me that the event started Tuesday, not Wednesday. As such, we have an extra 1440 minutes to seduce folks into competing. At this rate, we should break 50.

All right, we need to fill out the alphabetical portion of the contestants. We have 16 of 26 letters covered for last names (Mac being entered twice for "P" doesn't help the other vowels and consonants.) We need last names that begin with the following letters:

A, I, J, N, O, Q, U, X, Y & Z

If you know someone, invite her/him/them/it pronto. Here are the instructions again.

Thanks for setting the group up.  Should be fun.  There are some great first round matches and the potential for interesting matchups throughout the rounds.  With the parity and excellent play from all over the world now, nothing would surprise me in the first round.

MATCH PLAY-The greatest game in golf

I have been fortunate to have refereed 94 USGA Championship matches but there are two that stick out in my mind. To the casual fan , both were probably considered potential blow outs on paper BUT this is MATCH PLAY, where anything can happen.
The first was the semifinal at THE US Amateur at Newport in '95. Tiger VS. a beer salesman from Maine named Mark Plummer. I've known Mark fo 30 years and there is no tougher competitor. It was supposed to be a mercy killing but Mark made a couple of putts on the back side he had no business making and took the "Great One " to the final hole. Mr. Woods had a few beads of sweat on his forehead.
The second match took place at Kearney Hills in '97 at the APL. One player was tall, athletic, dressed right out of GQ and was confident and intimidating. He was Captain of the USC golf team. The other player walked on the tee with tennis sox, dirty shoes, cargo shorts , an untucked white polo shirt with no logo and a bucket hat. Oh, and he was about 5-7 and 140 pounds. Never heard of him. I figured I was in for an early lunch. Mr. bucket hat hit every fairway and green on the front side and did not have a birdie putt on the front more than 10 feet. He shot 30 on the front and won the match going away. It was an absolute clinic. Winner of the match was Rjuji Imada, the guy beaten silly was Roger Tambellini. You might recognize these two gentleman.

Just to clarify that, my wife does follow golf and has an idea who the players are - she just didn't spend an exhorbitant amount of time second-guessing and over analyzing (plus, we forgot to have her fill out the bracket and she was pressed for time this morning).

For example, I doubt she cares how Dove Mountain's design may favor players ranked in the top 20% of Scrambling Ability or those ranked highest in Proximity to Hole on desert-style courses.

I feel slightly better. Ronald made it sound like it was akin to last year's NCAA tournament when on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike," the producer Liam's mom picked UConn-Butler final match-up, UConn winning it all and nearly the final score. The odds? 1 in 10 million...

UConn's and Butler's chances of making the title game were 2.3 percent and 0.19 percent, respectively. This means the probability of picking both teams to make the championship game is (2.30% * 0.19%) roughly 1 in 25,000.

Obviously, this is an incredible achievement on its own, but Liam's mum went a step further and nearly guessed the final score as well. Using AccuScore simulations of this matchup, the probability that UConn would score between 51-55 points was 8.8 percent. The probability Butler would score between 39-43 points was only 4 percent. The chance of both things happening in the same game was 0.39 percent.

Putting all of these numbers together, the chance of anyone four weeks ago predicting UConn to make the championship game and Butler to make the championship game and UConn to score between 51-55 points in the championship game and Butler to score between 39-43 points in the championship game is 0.000000174, or nearly 1 in 10 million!
