The 1st at White Bear Yacht Club is pretty special. This is a fun opener that gives you an idea of how fun a day you will have.

The Knoll, George Bahto's home club certain has a memorable first tee.

The 1st hole tees on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th nines at Montclair are also somewhat memorable.

Crowborough Beacon, for the unique fact that if you have a wide arc, your clubhead may well hit a car travelling at 40mph. The road is that close.

Muirfield Village...I was not expecting that kind of elevation change.

Inverness Club...duel fairway with 10...great opening to a classic Ross.

Oakmont... considered widely as the hardest opening hole in golf on maybe the hardest course in the world.  Such a cool place.

As we all know, photos eliminate quite a bit of the elevation, but this opening tee shot at Stone Eagle gave me goosebumps.

First tee at castle Pines was one I always loved to wander up to as a spectator. It's the high point on the course (other than the back of the range) and heading straight toward the mountains.

I agree that elevation changes make for an interesting first hole. Manufacturers just outside of Philadelphia fits that bill. I think obvious difficulties get yor blood going as well so Tobacco Road gets to you right away with the giant mounds. Bethpage has the elevation and also the fear factor of you know what is coming over the next few hours so that is up there as well. Plus you usually have 30 guys standing behind you wishing you would hurry up so they can get going.

I think the location of the first tee, more than the actual tee shot to be played, is what makes it memorable.  For me, first tees that will likely be watched by a gallery are memorable.

Examples:

Merion (East)
St. Andrew's (Old)
Lahinch
Oakland Hills (South)
Ballyneal
Atlantic City CC
Kingsley Club


Opening Tee Shots with great vistas can be memorable as well...

Crystal Downs
Pasatiempo
Muskoka Bay Club
Sanctuary (Colorado)
Shinnecock Hills

Kington is one of my favourites.


Alwoodley too begs the golfer to tee it up. 

Stepping down from the grandiose house to St Georges Hill first tee is very fine.


Porthcawl's is one of the best reason's to play the course.

Bill,

In regards to "tell a story of what is to come", I like this photo in that as you're coming up from the range you get to look straight down the hole.  I can't think of another course that gives you a preview like this en route from warming up.

I think that many would agree with that.

Boca Rio, with a slightly elevated 1st tee offers a memorable experience.

The first at Belgrade Lakes in Maine.  The actual view is more dramatic with more of a sense of elevation.
