Yardage Restricted?
« on: February 18, 2012, 03:28:53 PM »
Gary McCord just remarked that #10 at Riviera was "arguably the best yardage restricted hole in golf."  It's hard for me to digest that statement.  I don't understand the term.  It seems to imply that "yardage restricted" holes aren't as good as their longer counterparts.  In fact, in hearing much of the gush over #10 by the commentators, it always centers on how great the hole is despite it's length.  What says the treehouse about the espoused viewpoint of our friends at CBS?

My opinion is that holes are either good, great, or not.  The factors that make a hole great shouldn't be confined to a length discussion.

As an aside, I like hearing the guys on CBS talk about architecture, I just wish they didn't sound so oafish in doing so.

why comment on anything Mccord says???

the other architectural comments by Faldo etc...eg.  regarding the necessity of shotmaking and shaping shots both right and left are spot on

Ben,

I also heard that call and immediately cringed. I agree, the implication of the phrase is completely at odds with the reality of the hole.

It would also be nice if they quit saying Kikuyu was "really sticky" and actually explain why a chip and run isn't really an option.

Do you think the 10th hole would be considered great if it were 380 yards long?  420 yards?

There usually is a single over-riding factor that makes a hole great and in the case of the 10th, it is its length ... or lack thereof ...

How many times can you say 'short'?  He'll probably call it 'horizontally challenged' before tournament's end.

I think McCord took too much acid one weekend in college and now his synapses are restricted.  Anyone who wears a mustache like that without a sense of irony has a screw loose...and yes, a hole is either great or not, yardage in and of itself has little to do with it.  In fact, if anything I'd say there's nothing better than a really great short par 4...

Mike, re your above statement:

Perhaps there is always a single over-riding factor, I suspect there is sometimes more than one though.

But IMO, there is no such thing as "lack of" length - 10 is great and one of the reasons is it's length, along with angles, bunkering, green slopes and size. I think lack of length implies some lesser architectural values.

I think 4 is also a great hole because of its length ( along angles, bunkering and green slopes and size, ) not because it has too much length...

McCord now going on about how a 3 will win it on such a short hole in the playoff.  After three horrid tee shots, maybe a 5 wins it.

Why isn't anyone hitting a 4 iron over the first set of bunkers to leave 70-90 yds in?  Aren't these guys wizards with a wedge?
