Skiing and GCA
« on: February 16, 2012, 01:19:04 PM »
I was ridding a chair lift last night and could not help but draw comparison between some of the small natural feature one sees on a ski slope to the features one hopes for in great golf land. Small knolls and hollows, gently rolling ground. Obviously the slope is to severe, but somehow I could see it. Or maybe it was just too cold and the hypothermia was kicking in.

I've actually heard pretty compelling arguments made that golf/golf course design and cross country skiing have a lot of parrallels.

Both use distance aids or perhaps carts for those not totally committed to the game.

Yes  I can see the aids offer the right incentive to allow some to preserver with their chosen sports even if it’s not suitable for them - after all it comes down to One's Human Rights.

Wait? So if I use a chair lift to get to the top of a mountain...I'm not "totally committed" to skiing? I guess I never realized all this time I wasn't really skiing, but doing something called "lift-skiing."  :P

I have found out that golf cart paths have the same design parameters as X country ski paths, down to being placed on the south side of tees and greens (to keep the path shady for better ice/snow and to keep the green/tee sunny for better turf).

Moguls are pretty good approximations of chocolate drop mounds.

At Giant's Ridge, I did suggest they use ski lifts to get golfers up to a few of the more elevated tees as a nod to their winter sport (didn't happen there, but I think it has elsewhere)

Back in my KN days, we did some remodel for a local Chicago ski hill.  I recall the owner getting some fill that would allow him to raise his hill.  However, he didn't want runs any steeper and he didn't want them going across the golf course.  We kept drawing him section views to show that was impossible - higher and same slope means longer or higher and same length means steeper.  He didn't seem to understand.
