Pinehurst area - NLE
« on: February 17, 2012, 05:26:06 PM »
I was looking around the Pinehurst area on Google Maps today and before I get to the NLE, I must say, I can't recall seeing another area with such a high concentration of golf courses, (maybe certain spots in Florida?).  I never realized the extent to how many golf courses are right in that little spot.

I noticed there is a piece of land just to the north of The Pit and to my eye it looks like a NLE.  Is this actually so, and if so does anyone know what it was? Or perhaps it was going to be a large housing development that didn't pan out?

P.S.  Any word on whether The Pit will re-open.  After reading past threads, there seems to be a lot of mixed opinions on the place amongst the GCA crowd.

Thanks,

Cory Lewis

Kalen,

That's not an NLE, that's a never was.  What you are seeing is the routing for the abandoned #9 course by Rees Jones.  It was shaped and cleared out and they were ready to start seeding but then they stoped in 2001.  I haven't heard anything about The Pit lately, everybody says Pinehurst bought it so they could use it for parking during the open in 2014.  After that who knows?  They now own 900 continuous acres on Route 5-the property where 9 & 10 was supposed to be, and The Pit.

Ahh,

Thanks for the clarification Cory, so it isn't a NLE, its ANW.

So why all the mixed emotions on the PIT?  Over the top quirky?
