Not sure what comments you'll get....but having lived in the Virgin Islands in 1994 and a many-time visitor my whole life, you're not there for the golf...

I played the course once, remember one shot.

Hi John,

As the only show on the island golf-wise, you're kind of stuck there.  I remember it being pretty expensive.

I played it a few years ago, and the course doesn't really stick out in my mind good or bad.

The Devil's Triangle includes an awkward short par four with the green near the cliff, a great par three over the chasm, with huge cliffs, iguanas, etc., and a par five that I don't really remember.  I think if you par all three (or tell them you did), you get a poster of the par three.

Regardless, have fun!

p.s.  Order a few a Duffy's Love Shack for me...classic parking-lot bar down near the ferry to St. John with crazy drinks.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

The odds of your clubs showing up are slim anyway.Spend the day on St Johns instead.

Sean and I have been over this I think...I wouldn't call it AWFUL so much as not noteworthy other than the cliff hole.

Was tempering my comments because I figured JB was playing anyways...

Anyone played Carambola over on St. Croix?
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Played it and i remember several places where a good drive runs out to bad country-everything feeds into a mangrove swamp or something.  the club had placed boards next to the swamps to prevent them filling with balls.

Brad's recollection of the triangle and mine are similar--par 3 is memorable, but the par 4 will warp your soul.

It'll satisfy your urge for a mid-winter chance to swing the clubs, but if you dont need that, St. John's is a better use of time.

Not really worth your time, effort to get to the course or the risk of your clubs being misplaced...I agree spend the day on a boat or in St John...

Mahogany has condition problems due to the usual fresh water shortage problems on every Caribbean island.  Also, the Devil's Triangle is scenic but not such great architecture.

Carambola Bay is actually a better golf course although that is a relative term.

I don't bother with golf in the Caribbean unless it's at Casa de Campo.  Now THAT's worth the effort!

I've been there a number of times while on cruises.

If you have your clubs and you're there don't be discouraged from playing it by the naysayers here.  It is a unique experience.  It is certainly not one of the premiere courses in the world, or even in the Caribbean, but worth a try.  Plenty of quirky holes.  It is the epitome of firm and fast.

General overview from the clubhouse area.

A long drop tee shot.  Plenty of hang time.

The ninth, I thnk.  Your opportunity downwind, downhill on firm fast turf for a 300+ yard drive.

The par 4 green in the devil's triangle.

The par 3 in the devil's triangle.  I get vertigo on the tee and the winds are fierce on the cliff.  Hard to hang it 50 yards out over the ocean to drift it back on the wind.

I almost made a hole in one on the Devil's Triangle par three, from way up on the hill!  Lucky bounce, to say the least.  Was a long time ago, and don't remember much about it.  I don't mind golf in the Caribbean, but usually rent clubs and play simply to play in the winter.  I played both Mahogany and Carambola in the early 90's, and not much sticks out.  If I were there now, I'd play but that's because I don't get to play in the winter at home!

Plenty of room for perhaps 13 or 14 excellent holes but instead you get 2 or 3 good golf holes, a bunch of junk and a couple of stunning visual holes at 13 and 14, though 13 is not a great hole by any means.

For turf enthusiasts MR offers an eclectic blend of 419 greens, st. augustine/common bermuda fairways and the occasional unidentifiable strain.

If you go, don't take it seriously, get a cooler and DO NOT try to drive down the hill to the right of the 15th fairway as my playing partners did back in 2000.

John, please give us a report when you return.  I've been to St. John/St. Thomas quite a few times, including a week at the end of this Jan., but have never taken my clubs to try the course.  I've heard both good and bad, and that the conditioning of the course has varied over the years from "really awful" to "not bad at all."

Carl,

I have played it probably 25-35 times over the course of several years and it never approached "not bad at all" status.

After 4 hours of standing behind cruise ship patrons who probably said "Let's try golf today", my son and I drove off after the 12th hole to do a quick tour of The Devil's Triangle, which if I remember correctly, they give you a t-shirt if you play it with one ball.

At $150+ per person, it easily sits at #1 on the list of "worst course I played for the money" list.

Honestly, the beaches on St John are all world and a trip to Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke is a way better time.

The Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke is pretty darn good too.  Let's not get into a which-is-better . . . .  Enjoy both.  http://www.soggydollar.com/soggydollarbar/
