Okay...let's just say you have enough time near Melbourne to play two days at Royal Melbourne and one day at Kingston Heath and then you have one more day?  Where do you play and why?

Woodlands - I think its more fun than the alternatives.

It has many unique architectural ideas such as the 4th green and in my opinion has the most interesting set of holes among all the other courses. It has its flaws like the finisher, but easily makes up for them with a couple of fantastic runs of quality golf. It's scruffier and less manicured than all the other courses and that's why I think its put aside for places like Metro.

The short list includes Victoria, Commonwealth, Woodlands, Peninsula CC, Metropolitan and one or two others.

My answer would be to spend the third day on a down and back trip to play Barnbougle!

A day trip to the Mornington Peninsula to play St Andrews Beach and National (Moonah) would have to be up there.

You play Commonwealth. 

It has the best par three in Melbourne, the best short four, and the best collection of medium length two-shotters as well.  There are also a couple of decent long fours, and whilst there may still be a few too many trees, the whole place has a charm that none of the others can match.

Of course, in an ideal world, you would skip Kingston Heath and play Woodlands anyway.

Next would be Vic and then Commonwealth then Woodlands

RM in one day is not a tough walk

The other suggestions are good but will not give you an experience that you will not get elsewhere

If you have a spare day, then more golf at RM or Barnbougle would be first choice. 

after that i would go down to the mornington peninsula and play st andrews beach and either national old or national moonah. 

The second tier sandbelt courses (woodlands, commonwealth, Peninsula, Victoria)  are probably as good as st andrews beach and national moonah but they are probably weak immitations of kingston heath and RM, IMO.  The Peninsula courses are unique and interesting.

Barnbougle is 604km to Melbourne which I think is stretching the Melbourne area tag. Heck its only 740km from Gullane to Deal and I'd hardly call us in the same area!

I have played Commonwealth and attended events at Victoria and Huntingdale.

All three give you the sandbelt experience, though Huntingdale seems to have been Americanized somewhat.... there's a lot more water there, for one.

Commonwealth was fun... and hard. Even in a downpour the greens were like glass. The par-threes were awesome. My dad and my brother flew down there for my wedding and we all went and played it.... an experience none of us will soon forget.

I stole that from an absolutely scathing (and hilarious) critique someone did of that particular course (Capital). I have not played it so I cannot vouch for its quality (or lack of). All I know is that it is a fairly new course built in the same part of Melbourne as many of the sandbelt courses, but is basically nothing like a sandbelt course.

Seems like the most popular suggestion is to go down to St. Andrews Beach and the National.  Thanks for all your suggestions.  I didn't include it in my original post but a trip to Barnbougle was already part of the plan.
