Eat mat and die
« on: February 17, 2012, 07:18:34 AM »
Is there any alternative to the use of mats to protect golf courses during the winter?

I only ask because I ruddy hate them. I would prefer not to play rather than carrying around a two-foot long, limp piece of Astroturf. I suppose you could play into the rough, but what's the point of that (I do that anyway)?

There must be some other way...

Move?

I have never seen one of these mats of which you speak.

This would be a good time to play the course backwards if possible.  Rest for the regular greens and tees.  The divots in the fairways would most likely in a different area than when the hole is played in the normal direction.

Mark,

Here is a discussion from a few months ago started when my home course announced a series of measures to protect the course through the winter...

BTW here is a link showing the type of mats we use:

Having previously used the astroturf mats I wasnt looking forward to it, but these mats are fine, easy to play off and don't hold water or mud that much so are easy to carry around. You can get a very silly amount of backspin with them though for some reasons!  ::)

Cheers,

James

My experiences with conventional mats have generally resulted in fluffed shots and a tangled mess of aluminium and Astroturf.
These cutting-edge mats seem to be the way forward, and the generous back-spin would be a welcomed bonus.
I suppose the only alternative is to move to California, or even better, Arizona for the winter.
