No but I can tell you the Mike Clayton has an interesting discussion with John Huggan in this months Golf World UK edition. Certainly worth checking out.

Brian - I fear I won't do it justice, but here goes: it's about how Mac came through a serious medical issue (including an initial mis-diagnosis that has had lasting consequences) and how taking up golf helped to revive his spirit and to put the past behind him. 

That's a poor summary, and doesn't capture any of the "life" that springs off the page.

Great story about Mad Mac, and very thought-provoking.

But--in the spirit of the friendly (and sometimes not-so-friendly) repartee that imbues this website, I must take issue with Mac's contention in the closing few sentences that he didn't trust the 9-handicapper who shot 74.

I've done it, and seen it done.  Every dog has his day, and if a few putts drop, a ball hits a tree just right and stays in bounds...it can legitimately happen!

I'm a 15 Capper and shot a legit  78 about 2.5 years ago.  Haven't been anywhere near it since....best I've done is a few rounds in the low 80s.

According to the USGA, the odds of a 9 handicap beating his handicap by 7 in a tournament is 1200:1. So, while it can be done, it is very easy to tell if someone is "careering" it, or shooting a low stress 74. Knowing Mac, I suspect the player was the latter.

And yes, I know it was not a tournament, but I couldn't find non tourney stats and I figured he pressure of playing with Mac closely approximates major tournament golf.

By admitting the following I give a brief glimpse into my obsessive-compulsive nature, but regardless:

My meticulous record-keeping, available at the touch of the keyboard, reveals I have shot 74 exactly 10 times.  (And about the same number of rounds even lower than that.)

My index is pretty stable..generally between a 6 and an 8.5, so I am a legit 9 much of the time, although occasionally a 7 or 8. 

So--while I believe the odds to be accurate as outlined in the last post, theoretically I would've drawn Mac's suspicions over and over and over had he been with me on any or many of those rare-and-auspicious instances!

I can't spend too much time posting now as I'm out of pocket right now.  But I had to comment on Joel's post.

No Joel your scores are not suspect at all.  I've seen you play and score well and score not so well.  Also, I've seen the way you treat me and others.  I have no concerns about any lies on the golf course from you.

Max included that part about the score vs. Handicap, I guess, because he thought it added insight into the character assassmenbt that can take place on a golf course.  What wasn't included was that this guys handi went from 2 to 9 quickly right before his club championship.  And as I tracked his GHIN in the coming days/weeks that 74 never made it to his scorecard.  But a series of 84 and 85's did.  I really don't need much more than that to get a clear idea of what this guy is all about.

Well..that guy is obviously a low-life...and good to see you tracked him so diligently to prove it to yourself.  Love to see that "win at all costs" mentality to earn some pro shop chits or a new umbrella!

I admitted to obsessive/compulsive disorder a few posts ago.  NO WAY am I admitting how many rounds  I play!  This isn't the Dr. Phil Show, though at times it comes close...

Great to hear of Mac in print; cannot wait to read the article. I don't know of a more enthusiastic golfer who has taken to the game and to architecture more quickly and more knowledgably.

As for handicap anomalies, I'm very curious. This summer as an 11-index I went to Sand Hills and shot 74 in the company of Dick Youngscap, so there's a credible witness to what was admittedly the round of my life. I quickly went to 9.4 and am now trending back steadily. Once in 1,000 it happens.

Mac is one of the best Ambassadors in golf.  A gentleman, wide eyed appreciation, kindness, and class.  Always fun to be around.  He just gets "it" and realizes the game is a gift.


I played with Brad the day after he went low at Sand Hills.  Never seen him more relaxed and happy...giddy, in fact.  He was with and old friend and his lovely wife was on the trip.  In a way, he was home.

Speaker John was relaxed when he went low here, made everything he looked at!  Didn't have to perform, was just himself and had a blast.

I play my best at places I love and when I'm relaxed.  Seems a trend.  If you get out of your own way, scoring can happen.  Beautiful helps.
