1937-38 San Francisco Aerials!!
« on: February 04, 2012, 03:32:01 AM »
The original of this is in the SFPL History Center and as I found out today,it can now be accessed on David Rumsay's website. Some amazing aerials that shows SF before it developed over the sand dunes and provides a very interesting view of the golf courses in SF. I have looked over these before, but I wanted to look over the McLaren Park property to see if any of the articles that mentioned Alister MacKenzie and Robert Hunter designing an 18 hole course and a pitch and putt course were ever built. Looks like that wasn't the case, now I just have to track down the plans if they still exist!

SFGC-
This shows the other half of the aerial that is in Geoff Shackelford's "Golden Age of Golf Design." Note the date in the book lists these as 1928 which is 10 years too early. There was a 1928 aerial that captures the area for a coastal aerial study , but it appears that the course is not shown. That is unfortunate as it would have shown the course as AWTillinghast had it bunkered through his renovations and  before Bell Sr. rebuilt the bunkers and put his familiar twist on the bunkers as seen in these aerials.

Ingleside Golf Course

This is what had originally been the second SFGC site and was the course for Cal-Club from 1918 to when they moved to their current location. This course was developed in the after WWII and is currently under Park Merced and San Francisco State University. The second photo shows how close the courses were as you can see parts of Ingleside-Harding-Olympic-SFGC in one picture

Olympic Club

Good view of the holes on the other side of Skyline, or what is left of them. Quite the tree planting took place there!! Not all of the course is represented as they fall outside of SF County. In 144, you can see where they blacked out a military installation.

Presidio Golf Club

Looks like a noticeable bunker removal program to save some money and they have yet to buy the trees that most golfers have gotten to know all to well over the Presidio course!

Some interesting things to note like the current 3rd plays as a par 4 from the parking area up on the hill at the Fine Arts Museum. Lots of changes over the years prior to this aerial and looks like some bunkers have been filled in.

Thanks Tully....This is awesome.  I have heard you say where the Ingleside course was, but now I can actually picture it and truly know where it stood.  Very cool.  Thanks for all this work you do.

Josh

Ingleside Golf Course

This is what had originally been the second SFGC site and was the course for Cal-Club from 1918 to when they moved to their current location. This course was developed in the after WWII and is currently under Park Merced and San Francisco State University. The second photo shows how close the courses were as you can see parts of Ingleside-Harding-Olympic-SFGC in one picture

Sean -

Thanks for the aerials. Great pics!

I am guessing that a couple of the holes in the 2nd pic of the Presidio may have been altered after that pic was taken due to the construction of the tunnel & roadway linking Park Presidio Blvd. out to the Golden Gate Bridge.

The first pic of the Presidio also shows the course before the tees and greens on the current 10th & 18th holes were reversed.

Sean,

Wow!

You've been quiet lately, but when you pop up ... you sure blow the doors off.  Tremendous stuff.

It's very neat to see Lincoln's par 4 3rd in action before the landslide.

Of course, I'm not going to let you off the hook so easily...  ;D

Anything for down the immediate Peninsula like Sharp Park, Union League (looking for an early aerial), Cal Club, Caphuchino, Burlingame, or Peninsula?

Do you happen to know if the collection goes into other areas of the state like the LA basin and San Diego?  I'd really love to get my hands on an aerial of SDCC at some point.

As always thanks for sharing.

Some years ago I found 1943 aerials of SFGC, Olympic, and others but nothing from 1938. Most of the Dept of Ag. aerial survey photos were taken between 1937 and 1940 and unfortunately not all of them arrived at NARA. Some key areas - SF, northern NJ, NYC suburbs - are not available and I've assumed if they still existed they either were in private hands or in county or state archives. However, the detail on these is far better than anything I've seen at NARA.

Sean,

This is terrific work indeed....big Kudos go out to you.

Looking at that one that shows most of Olympic, even by the late 30s, that land west of Skyline had already been repossessed by mother nature.  It is indeed interesting to see how much tree planting went on at Olympic too...I guess in the early days it really did play wide open, a far cry from what it is now.

Any other info on that course thats NLE?  Looks like it had some neat holes/bunkering on it.

Aside from the recent changes to the 7th & 8th holes on the Lake Course, it does not look as though the course has changed much at all since that picture was taken in 1938. The routing looks to be very much in tact.

Legend has it that RT Jones removed a number of fairway bunkers prior to the US Open in 1955, but it does not look like there were very many of them to begin with.

Awesome work as usual! Thanks for posting.

David, I'm looking at pic 143. Comparing that to Google Maps it seems like some greens may have been relocated; as I don't know the course I can't say whether the routing has changed at all.

Beyond that, the tree intrusion, at least from up in the air, looks positively claustrophobic!

Is that the reality on the ground?

There are series of aerial photos (going back 60+ years) posted on a wall in the Mens Locker Room at Olympic Club. I don't recall seeing any changes made to the routing of the Lake Course or any of its greens being moved (aside from the recent changes to #7 & #8). On the other hand, the Ocean Course has been changed regularly thru the years.

You can also see in those pics how the trees have grown in on the property since WWII. They got VERY thick 20-30 years ago. I don't know how current the Google maps pics is, but the good news is that there has been an active tree removal/thinning program there over the past 5-10 years. I hope that program continues for another 5-10 years!

Sean,

Wow!

You've been quiet lately, but when you pop up ... you sure blow the doors off.  Tremendous stuff.

I have been very busy adding new information to my database, I am so far behind. I have found some good stuff as of late on Chicago Golf Club and a lot of new mentions on Tom Bendelow that will keep Stuart busy for a while. Still doing the MacKenzie research and you will see that soon as the 16th will be another impressive update of our previous work.

It's very neat to see Lincoln's par 4 3rd in action before the landslide.

Agreed. That course changed so much over the years with the course at one point having as many as 13 par3's!

Of course, I'm not going to let you off the hook so easily...  ;D

Anything for down the immediate Peninsula like Sharp Park, Union League (looking for an early aerial), Cal Club, Caphuchino, Burlingame, or Peninsula?

This aerial only covered the San Francisco County and nothing more as it was for the City of SF Public Works. Sharp Park as you know is in San Mateo County.

Do you happen to know if the collection goes into other areas of the state like the LA basin and San Diego?  I'd really love to get my hands on an aerial of SDCC at some point.

As mentioned above this aerial survey was done for the SFPW and I have seen other areas like Santa Cruz having done the same thing. Can't say the same for other areas. The Fairchild Collection at Whittier College is a good place to start along with other online archives. As Craig Disher mentions, there were a number of aerials done by one Federal agency or another and the timeframe we are looking for usually falls much earlier than those. There were some pilots doing aerial photography into the late 1910's and early 1920's but they are hard to come by, but I have seen a handful of aerial photos in the papers from those periods. Not very good, but better than nothing.

I have reached out to a aerial archive in SoCal to see what they have beyond a number of aerials they have online. They have some aerials from the late 1920's that could be very promising.

As always thanks for sharing.

Does anyone know how much of the Wilfrid Reid design remains in the Olympic Club aerial here?

Will be working on this as I have some articles from when the course was first built and some of the changes that took place after that. Reid did do the work with Walter Fovargue a Pro from Skokie CC and an associate of Donald Ross, and Jim Donaldson from Glen View. They were also doing some advisory work at Del Monte around the same time.

I have these pictures of the front and back of the 8th. green. I was told that these photos were taken when course was new. In any event the bunkers look identical to those in the 1938 aerial, suggesting that the 8th. green was not changed. My interest in learning more about this stems from my ongoing research on Wilfrid Reid and William Connellan. The Olympic Club chapter of the story is not very clear.

When you say the 8th green on the Lake Course "was not changed," to what time frame are you referring? The hole was completely changed 3-4 years ago. The green was moved 10-20 yards and the tee box was moved 100 yards or more.

Prior to that, I believe the location of the green was unchanged since before WWII, although the shape & contours of the green and the bunkering around the green had likely been changed one or more times.

If you ever get to San Francisco, I would be happy to show you the aerial photos of the course in the clubhouse.

Sean,

Thanks for that follow up.

Also, the Fairchild Collection is now closed  ???

So I'm not sure what's going to happen there, but I'm hoping one day it will be back up.
