Always been partial to the utilitarian and the ubiquitous, as in a block of apartments from NY's Little Italy. Who knows what humble craftsman/architect provided such homes for generations of people

I don't know if there's a "greatest," but the architect whose work was most fascinating to me is Antonin Gaudi.  There has really been nothing else like it, before OR after, and as wild as it is, it all makes perfect sense at the structural level.

He is fascinating. And as different as it is, it all seems to fit perfectly in Barcelona.

I mentioned Palladio but for a house it would be Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Michael,

I actually wrote a piece on the Kimball Art Gallery, so I too am a fan, but greatest ... not so sure.

Tom,

I like that choice too.

I'm actually suprised that Frank Lloyd Wright wasn't the commmon response. Or even Louis Sullivan ....

To do the topic justice, it should include what architectural aspect or theory from one of these architects applieds best to golf architecture.
For example the theory of compression and release by FLW definately can be used in golf design.

Yes Antoni Gaudi is a good choice.

I have seen furniture of his in Spain which was beautifully balanced. What I found amazing was that, for example, the left hand and right hand carving in the frontspiece of a cupboard was actually quite different in pattern or even motif. No symmetry at all yet the balance of the piece was perfect. How do you do that? Very neat.
So in an struggling attempt to tie that idea to Ian Andrew's which "..aspect or theory from one of these architects applys best to golf architecture." maybe the asymmetrical bunkering around a green can be done so pleasantly and cleverly that a fine sense of balance is the outcome.

As I said I'm struggling, it's a stretch but there it is!

Cheers Colin

Let me ask a slightly less subjective question, but one travelling along the same road.

Whose architectural work is most often referenced here?

I'd guess A. Mackenzie. (With Ted Robinson in second, but closing fast. ;))

Mac - Understood, but I'd still guess MacK over the 10 or so years GCA has been up and running.

Peter - Your picture of Little Italy in NYC reminds me of a thought I've often had when in NYC. It would be a so much more beautiful place without those freaking fire escapes facing the street.

Bob

How could Mckenzie be the most referenced here?
 he didn't design PV,NGLA,and Merion ::) ::) ?
and he designed that hated course where they play that little event in April.
Two big GCA negatives

The architect whose work I have enjoyed the most is ....
James Braid-
many of my favorite courses are his work, and usually I'm unaware he's the architect of record until after the fact

Ian is for Frank Lloyd Wright who was quite a single minded man.

I love what he said in his later years. " Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose honest arrogance and see no reason to change."

Sounds like a bunch of our politicians.
