2012 An old topic for a new day

This site opens our eyes to great golf around the world. If there was one spot to spend your life and you wanted golf to be a part of it each day, where would you pick? I pick Pebble Beach for the place I would be if there can only be one.

Since Tiger has taken Monterrey, I'll go with the Hamptons in the summer and Melbourne in the winter.  Its the only solution that works if golf has to be a part of each and every day.

San Francisco. Great golf, culture, food, sports ... and, if permissible in this hypothetical thread, driving distance to tee it up with Tiger at Pebble.

To get in on Tiger's gig, I'll stoop to hitching a ride on a turnip truck, though the tight cargo area of TigerAir would work as well, blankets provided.

JB, that is awfully hard to answer.  One would have to make a number of other assumptions.  Most particularly, if one could afford to be in some favored "spot". One would have to assume that one has already seen most of the known world to make that decision with some validity.  Who has?   Also, one's age, physical condition, and if one even wanted to actually play golf every day...  ::) ;)

I can see Chris's nomination for the Sand Hills region.  I could personally see myself being able to afford that, and one can pretty much play there the better part of 8-9 months a year.  Of course if price was no object, the whole Monterrey Penn and Santa Cruz region is pretty dern nice!  I can only guess I'd really like the sand belt in Melbourne.  

Given the whole exercise it too hard for me to make any definitive answer, I'll just stick with the little "spot" I occupy on the planet, and hope to visit the rest from time to time.  ;) 8)

Even with as little as I currently play, I've still grown accustomed to having a course to myself

I gotta go with London. Base out of Woking and pick up a second at Rye. Join the "LOGS" (League of Gentlemen Golfers. Don't make any friends on the wrong side of Kent.

Every day? If I didn't need non-golf things maybe I pick a town like St A's or Lahinch and hit the craic every night.

RJ this is for dreams and the heart. Try not to let the realities of paying for such a life effect your thoughts. It would complicate mine if I had to balance making a living, family etc. PB is great but certainly has limitations from an economic perspective.

Monterey and Melbourne and St. Andrews are all great places for golf 10-12 months of the year.  Obviously, Melbourne offers more things to do apart from golf.

The advantage of St. Andrews is that everybody you'd like to meet in golf will come to visit, on a semi-regular basis [and I'm not just talking about hosting tournaments there].

North Berwick would not be a bad choice, either.

One day I played Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds with a lobsterman from the area. He was an engaging companion. On the back nine I asked him how he liked living on Cape Cod, and he said "I love it. If I didn't l'd leave. Don't you like where you live?"

Tom the only weakness of North Berwick is the lack of a decent pub!

Rye is a pretty decent place but it could hardly be called a golf town. Dornoch fits the bill but would be a hard year round gig. St Andrews has it all especially the residents pass which gives you annual golf for the price of a days visit to your private US club.
