If given the opportunity would you go play Pine Valley/Merion or National/Shinnecock/Sebonack or just Augusta National. At Pine Valley and Augusta I'd be staying on property, which is a big deal to me. Plus I could add any other club in Philly to the PV/Merion trip.

Think hard!

Thanks-

My advice is not cheap, so I request to be added to any group you finally decide to pick as payment (i will cover my expenses)

I would play Augusta, it seems a bit challenging to get on to.

PV and Merion are winners. Throw in Philly CC or the Cricket Club or Huntington Valley or Rolling Green and it would be a great trip.

Staying at PV would be icing on the cake.

IMHO
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

I think you've fried everyone's circuits by asking to think hard.
Whatever you're family would like to hear about more is a good one to choose...
They may be hearing about the trip for a while...
Have fun.

Must be nice to be Stu  :)  Still at OFCC?
Haven't you already played Pine Valley?

I'd choose the second three on Long Island.

It seems a bit odd that you'd have a choice of those courses given that Augusta closes in mid May and the others are just hitting their stride at that time.
If it's a October 15th -May trip-pick Augusta, If it's after May 15th pick either NE option

For me it all starts with, who are you going with.  If one guy or group of guys is a better friend/friends, more enjoyable company...I'd pick that one regardless of course(s).

Other than that, you can't lose.  But for my taste it would be:

1) Augusta National (hey, I live in GA)
2) Pine Valley/Merion
3) Shinnecock/NGLA/Sebonack (I've played all of these and I haven't played the others...that is why they are last on this list)

Have fun!!!

(Good point Michael) I should point out that exclusivity isn't really a factor. I've played many of these by getting on through the back door, but this time is through the front door. There's a big difference! Not that I don't appreciate the super or pro getting me on, I'm not saying that at all.

It's just different when you're treated like a member.

Yes I'm still at OFCC and thanks for your thoughts! This is weighing heavily on my mind.

Play the one you feel you are least likely to ever be a member of their staff.  Otherwise your trip is just going to be an interview.

The group will be the same guys regardless and the date is flexible depending on which location I choose.

Does this mean the three other guys are going on all three trips with a different newb each time?  You must be head newb getting to pick first.  Congrats.

Hmm, should I accept an invitation to Pine Valley/Merion?  ACI=67

Hmm, should I accept an invitation to Pine Valley/Merion or National/Shinnecock/Sebonack?  ACI=79

Hmm, should I accept an invitation to Pine Valley/Merion, National/Shinnecock/Sebonack or Augusta National?  ACI=98

In true GCA access fashion it frankly depends on the add-ons.  Philly has LuLu, Augusta has Aiken Golf Club and  Southampton has dinner with my favorite medical professional in the world.  I'd call it a push.

Like chosing between Vince Young, Jay Cutler or Matt Leinart,  sometimes it's best to have the third pick.   Good luck.

I'd rather not say but since I want your opinions I'll try to vaguely explain my situation. I'm about to do a favor for someone that is very well connected and this is what they offered me in response to my favor. I narrowed it down from about 20 different amazing options. I'm very grateful!

(Thanks for the PM's! You guys are cracking me up!)

The reason I'm asking is because I called my Dad and this is what he said -"Who would know better than your GCA friends?". I think he didn't want to make the decision for me.

If I had this decision to make, I would be updating the current thought on twitter daily. When I finally made the decision, I would announce it on a Lebron like 30 minute GCA podcast. I assume I would subsequesntly lose my invites.

What an opportunity!!  Congratulations on your dilemma.

I'd play Augusta just for the number of times I've seen it on TV and how truly beautiful it appears.

I probably don't belong on GCA for neither my answer nor my reasons.

this is truely a dilemma of dilemmas.  I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here.  You are in for an unbelievable experience either way, but at the same time, you are going to "miss out" on the others.  That being said, I would play Augusta.  U get to stay there too, that's the kicker.  You can tour the clubhouse, locker room, caddy room, everything!  I know what you mean about the difference between going in the "back door" and getting the full treatment.  Been there.

Many have said this: Augusta National may or may not be the greatest golf course in the world, but there's little doubt that it's the greatest experience.
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

What was the favor?  Are you donating a kidney?  ;)

The answer depends on what your goals are.  If it's about your friends, they are going to be winners any way you choose.  If it's about the golf, then I would say it's a toss-up between Philadelphia and Southampton.  [Sebonack has no bearing on breaking the tie.]

But, if you are being practical, an invitation to Augusta National is much harder to come by.  Neither Pine Valley nor Shinnecock is really that impossible to visit for someone in the golf business who knows a lot of people.  Augusta members are not nearly as numerous, and less likely to invite a "golf business" friend, at that.  And for your friends, it's almost certainly a once-in-a-lifetime chance.  So, I'd recommend Augusta.

I have not been to ANGC, but it is clearly a special place.

Aside from that, whether you choose the trip involving National or the one involving Pine Valley, you cannot go wrong and will have a remarkably special experience.

The courses are too hard to split. National has the setting, but PV has the turtle soup. Both have great pro shops...

You know, here's the only way to make such an impossible decision: if you like to hit balls before you play, go to PV. If you don't, go to National!

(My money is on you choosing ANGC at least partially for the reason Tom D mentions above)

Thanks Tom, I greatly respect your opinion because you've studied these properties in great detail. What you posted sums up my initial thought process. To answer your question my goal is to play the best golf courses. Do I think I'll be invited to Augusta again? Honestly, I do and I hope I'm right! Will I be invited to stay the night on club grounds again? Play multiple rounds? Maybe. Honestly I don't want to play Augusta as is, I believe the club's leaders made some bad decisions regarding the placement of trees, length, and rough. I believe and hope that in the coming years Mr. Payne will rethink many of Mr. Johnson's bad decisions. Until those bad decisions are reversed, I'm really truly not that excited about playing this version of the tournament course. Now the "experience" will be grand regardless and I'm not counting that out. Will I be invited again? That's the million dollar question.

I don't want to sound like an ungrateful idiot, I'm just trying to be honest with myself.

It's hard for me to pass up staying and playing at PV/Merion. I worship Ben Hogan, I have every single Ben Hogan book (bad and good) and I also worship Bobby Jones. They are my idols, I spend most of my free time reading about them and I know that would make you think I'd play Augusta (Jones). To me though Jones and Hogan made history at Merion and I can't stop thinking about that. Plus I'd be playing the course in U.S. Open like conditions...

It's a tough decision because I'd also be playing South Hampton and Friar's Head on long island (Different guy).

It seems like an easy decision until it's real.

I respect all you guys so much and I truly appreciate your thoughts. If I hadn't played them so many times Cypress/Pebble Beach/SFGC might be my number one choice!

And, I can't imagine how many of us will be buying you a drink at the Chicago dinner on Feb. 22.

Stu,

With the addition of those other Long Island courses, I know what I would elect to do in your position.

But again, whichever choice you make, it will be a good one!
