It is totally subjective on my part, but lately I have noticed far more lefties hitting on the two ranges where I do most of my practicing. It would be interesting to know what the percentage is of left-hand clubs of the total number of clubs currently being sold vs. what it was 10 or 20 years ago.

I am a lefty in baseball and hockey and started golf as a lefty but was quickly "turned around" by my father.

I have a 4 year old son who will switch from left to right on alternate shots sometimes.  He has a left handed set and he will pick up his sister's right handed club and hit it.  He also grips it crosshanded from both sides as well; which is really starting to confuse his father. ???

He started indoor T-ball this last Monday.  First at bat, lefty.  Second at bat, righty...but at least both were with conventional grips.

Maybe the T was righty then lefty and he was playing the percentages? :) Fwiw, I believe it's fairly common for kids to hold the club crosshanded when they first pick it up.

That is interesting since I learned gold as a junior to save money and not have to buy left handed clubs(which were WAY more expensive still)

Okay after talked to a few people the verdict is to give it a go, maybe not for game purposes but at least for shoulder pain reasonings, so the new question,

How would you go about doing it?

My father, is a natural lefty, but learned the game as a righty.  Not an avid golfer, he never carried a handicap, so I don't know what his "best" golf was.  He switched to his natural left side when he was about 50 years of age.  The swing was more fluid and had better rhythm  from his left side.  My son putts left handed and swings right handed.  My advice would be that it would be a difficult transition, but remember it is a "stick and ball" game, like baseball, and there are a lot of switch hitters in baseball, so it can be done. But, most switch hitters hit better from one side than from the other.

Chris,

While I'm no expert, if I were going about it I'd take a bunch of lessons as if I'd never played the game.  Remember it's easier to learn the right mechanics than it is to correct the wrong ones (I should know!).  Groove a swing with short irons and work your way up.  I'd go back to an instructor occasionally as well to make sure you're not veering from the path.

I am a natural lefty, but was taught and always played right handed. When i recovered from surgery in 2010 I seemed to have a bit of problem with my long puts. This year while going through recovery treatment etc I putted in my bedroom. I found I completely had the yips. I found an old lefty putter of my grandfather's. My stroke was a smooth as silk. I ordered a few lefty putters and when I play again I will be a lefty on the greens.

I am also a natural lefty but switched early on for lack of access to lefty clubs and the fact the pro told my father it would be better to have a strong left side for a right handed golfer.  One good thing is my baseball swing never messed up my golf swing!  Then late on my former teacher said he would have recommended I stayed a lefty but that was about 10 years too late!  Lefties just look better in my opinion!

Funny thing is I play tennis right handed because someone showed me how to hit right handed.  I was hitting two forehands at 6-7 yrs old then decided a baseball swining two handed backhand was more powerful!

Tyler I was a righty for the same reason. I played 18 to 36 holes of golf a day then practiced baseball and played at night. It  tok 3 or 4 swings in warmups to get the swing right and I was good to go for batting.

I have no clue where you are David, but the more hockey players you have, the more lefthanders you will have.

In Canada, we run about 20% lefty; the common belief is that many left handed hockey players become left handed golfers.
