Honest and sincere? Bit of a character?  Fast player?  Thrilled to be on the Tour?  Sounds like a solid professional golfer to me.

One reporter said that before the interview with KT he said that last year during a tournament KT mentioned on air that he was coming back from his suspension for marijuana possession and that really pissed him off because that was simply not the case....he was not in possession and the suspension was for conduct unbecoming blah blah blah...and all charges had been dropped.

Perhaps that was his "bringing up the subject" moment?  Never the less, he said he did not expect to be asked about it because it was over and done...end of story...in his mind...and he had just shot a helluva a round.

Turning down a scholarship...and walking on is a big deal. Do you think he didn't ask the Florida coach before he turned down the scholarship if he would get a scholarship? Like someone posted...there are a limited number of scholarships and often a players is told to play their way on to the team and maybe something will come up down the road....in other words...earn it.

On many teams it is very difficult to play your way on.  You really have to be a star performer to walk on as many coaches don't like their recruiting records to be dimished.

I beg to differ, Mike. Unlike almost all other collegiate sports, the starting lineups on a golf team are determined by the qualification process: before the tournament, the entire team will participate in the qualifying round(s), with the low (usually 5) scores earning the right to play. Unlike football, basketball, baseball, etc., every match/tournament is subject to the qualifying rounds.

Look at the numbers: 4.5 full ride scholarships are offered to each golf team in Division I. Say a powerhouse, like Florida, has 2 Seniors and a Sophomore on full ride. That leaves all of 1.5 scholarships to offer to upwards of 5-9 other players. Sadly, someone is going to go without a scholarship. When I played in college, one of our best players was not on scholarship because his family was pretty wealthy and his father decided that he would be able to foot the bill for his son, thus freeing up a scholarship to somebody more deserving.

David,

Some schools do it that way. Others have a certain number of spots reserved for a certain number of players, then the rest play off.

David,

Some schools do it that way. Others have a certain number of spots reserved for a certain number of players, then the rest play off.

At Ohio State in the 1970s, Coach Brown had no interest in walk-ons.  We had a couple guys in my group who could compete with the 4th player on down and could not even get a look.

At U. of Texas in the early 2000s, Coach Fields had no interest in walk-ons- the "qualifier" required blowing-off the first four days of school and getting to four different Austin area munis on your own, each location posted somewhere on campus the day before for tee times beginning at noon.  A student "qualified" if he shot par for four days from the tips.  No exceptions.  No qualifiers either.  Coach Fields would have no contact with the prospects, having repeated calls answered eventually by an assistant.  It was a fact that if the eight scholarship players were subjected to the same qualifier, one, perhaps two, would make the team.  The asst. commented something to the effect that they liked who they had on the team and that they lacked the facilities and time to take a chance on low-probability players.

Nick Faldo just can't help himself over his foot action.
It's the same every time, and he'd done it since childhood.
Many juniors do this and many LPGA players have that same foot action.
A bit unusual to see it in a strong male player.

Faldo was a technician who has a wonderful understanding of the golf swing, having retooled his swing as an adult then going on to win 6 majors. He also was a world class player BEFORE he retooled(nearly won the Open as a teenager) and disappeared for 2-3 years while he was retooling.
Many players attempt to retool and disappear permanantly.

Every misses a green(ten yards left of pin) from 3 inch bermuda and Faldo's convinced it's because of his left toe.
Or his clubface could've been fractionally shut by the wiry rough ;).

I will say at least Faldo has a great knowledge of the golf swing (as opposed to Miller who was just uncanny good and THINKS he's a genius), but I don't know that Every (or most anyone elsecould subject himself to retooling his swing in mid -career while trying to earn a living.

I haven't read this whole thread but I wonder if the Tour suspended him BEFORE he was convicted and if so, what his legal recourse was once the charges were thrown out.

I mean if we throw folks in jail and suspend them for being in that same area as folks that may smoke a joint then how do we handle, say a Phil M (fill in blank w/ populat player) for going to a U2 show where pot is being smoked. Hell, it's legal in many states.

Not Terry (by any stretch), but there is plenty of precedent in other sports for guys getting suspended even without charges being filed, so I'd guess there is little to no recourse. Big difference between private action and government action, in this ignoramus's opinion. :)

After the inevitable You Tube removal... the Every/Tilghman interview has been embedded here:

http://deadspin.com/5876129/

Looking at it, it seems that Every has put this incident his rear view mirror and was not thrilled that it came up... that said, he answered each question honestly but refused to spin either the incident or his subsequent experience in a way that would either minimize his involvement or maximize his contrition.

He might regret his answers due to the fact sponsors are no longer lined up around the block, but I don't think he should be crucified for his responses either.

I really don't think what he said was that big a deal....he was just being honest. If people don't wanna hear his honest answer than she shouldn't have asked the question.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Those criticizing the question ignore the fact that Every himself brought the subject up in the media tent beforehand. I am no Tilghman fan but I thought the question was appropriate and the interview much better than normal.

Thanks for that note.

But even if Every hadn't brought it up, asking about a guy's suspension from the Tour, for whatever reason, strikes me as a reasonable avenue of inquiry for any interviewer, including one from The Golf Channel. The Golf Channel is not a PR firm, or shouldn't be.

Not every interview can be as content-free as Tiger makes all of his.

My objection to Kelly T's interview is this: What a cheesy transition from saying Hawaii reminds her of "Lost," and that's one of his favorite shows, and boy, he must have seemed lost a couple years ago when he got arrested for drug possession.

My objection to Every's part of it (beyond his seeming cluelessness) is his statement that there's a whole lot worse stuff going on on the Tour than what he got suspended for, and that's all he'd say about that. Reminiscent of Tom Watson's saying there were cheaters on Tour, and everyone knew who they were -- but, no, he wouldn't name any of them.

Here's where I found the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7frSiOlL6c

That was just an awful interview, and it had nothing to do with Every.  How is Tilghman still employed by Golf Channel?

Third, I was very impressed with Every's college story.  He received a scholarship to North Florida, but he decided instead to put it on the line and walk on to the Florida golf team.  Of course, he won several tournaments and was an All-American there.

A University is allowed a very small number (4 1/2 for Division I schools) of scholarships, from which the coach can direct or dole out any way he sees fit. That comes out to a little over 1 full scholarship per class,

I kept hearing people--including golf pundits, especially--skewering Every for his lack of media savvy.  These are the same folks who, every time Tiger Woods gives an interview, complain that TW never gives any insightful or particularly honest-sounding answers.  So here's Matt Every, who gives perhaps the most honest interview I've seen by a golfer, and they try to obliterate him for it.

Why?  Because protecting the "image" of the Tour as being full of perfect angels and immaculate paragons of morality is more important than allowing the personality of an interesting player to come through, which, of course, would actually help the Tour become more compelling.  They don't seem to want to get out of their own way.

Finally, I think people are burying the lede here.  The widespread interpretation is that Every's essential shoulder-shrugging "Meh." as an answer to Tilghman's asking if he's "changed" since his suspension shows that he's dumb or bad.  In reality, I think, he was making a political statement that many people of my generation would agree with--that marijuana is not that big a deal and should be legal or decriminalized.  I personally do not hold that view but Every is entitled to his opinion.  In my opinion, the reaction to his expression of that view has been as indelicate as his response to a line of questioning abruptly initiated by Tilghman that was, at the very least, tacky.

I see no evidence that there is a generational divide here. The divide here, I think, is between those who find Every "interesting" and those who find him anything but.

I wonder, about you and other Tilghman critics: If you had been Kelly Tilghman, and you had attempted, completely unsuccessfully, to get this "interesting player" to talk about the round he had just played, what would you have done?

I'm neither a fan nor a non-fan of Kelly Tilghman (I'd be surprised if I've devoted as much as an hour of my life to her), but I think she's getting a bum rap for pursuing a subject of reasonable interest.

I would like to think that I would have resisted the urge to engage in a potentially very inflammatory and embarrassing line of questioning that would only serve to contribute to an unfair distraction of the tournament leader, mid-tournament.  On Sunday evening or Monday after he wins (or, heck, even if he doesn't win), I'd be far more comfortable with inquiring into his progress (or lack thereof) since his suspension.  But to bring that experience up while Every is trying to win a golf tournament, I think, is lower than I would feel comfortable going.  Perhaps that is why I'm not a TV journalist.

No problem with the question, in that alternative universe where she asks equally pointed questions to the stars of the tour.  By all means ask Every about this incident, if you're also going to ask Woods about fire hydrants, Phil M about gambling etc.  My problem is the unavoidable suspicion that Every gets special treatment because he's a nobody and they can, without risking losing a big attraction from the TV booth.

Ciao

Sean,

I do not know but common sense dictates that it would include "endowed" scholarships, such the one that Arnold Palmer founded at Wake Forest. Otherwise, what would prohibit a school from "buying" an unbelievably stacked team with the 4 1/2 scholarships + half dozen endowed ones, courtesty of some wealthy alums.

David

So you think endowment scholarships are used to top up those who received part scholarship under the 4.5 rules?

BINGO, Mark you hit it on the head.   Just be consistent.

I wonder what the actual wording of the definition is of "conduct unbecoming of a PGA Tour player" in the players manual.  I wonder how it would be applied if the names and situations were switched between Woods (or Phil) and Every.  Neither were charged, both were just using "poor judgement" and hey, adultery (certainly 123 instances as often cited) is illegal in many states, just as smoking pot...as is gambling for $1000 a hole like Phil and his crew do in practice rounds without reporting winnings on taxes...  Somewhere in Ponte Vedre there is a different definition of "conduct unbecoming, blah blah" for Tour stars!  I just hate double standards.
