That is a seriously open-ended question.  How far off the direct route are you willing to go?

Almost certainly someone is about to jump in and say its only hour and bit drive to all the Lancashire links courses  from Manchester and that Dornoch is in easy drive from Inverness etc however if you are asking what courses that are just off the M6/M74/A9 that are worth playing here's a few suggestions in travelling north and starting;

Penrith - don't really know any courses south of this but Penrith is good fun and has a bit of a heathland feel in part. There is a bit of an elevational change with some nice views. Shouldn't disappoint.

Carlisle - Carlisle GC is the best course in town but the nearby Brampton is worth a play but be worned their are a couple of serious climbs. If you are up for it there are some lovely holes.

Lochmaben - played this a couple of times in some outings. Some lovely Braid holes and some nice new holes played around a loch. Certainly worthwhile.

Hamilton GC - just south of Glasgow, a very fine Braid course that hasn't been f**ked up.

Glasgow - well thats a whole thread on its own. Email me if you want some recommendations.

Glenbervie - just south of Stirling. Has hosted various chamionships and has a good rep but haven't played. Parkland.

Stirling - I've not played this course but pals who have have given't it a decent rep. Looks up to the Castle.

Perth - various courses although I've only played the two relatively new courses at Murrayshall that are OK. Personally, I would stay in the car and keep driving until Pitlochry.

Pitlochry - gets a mention Doak. Great fun and great views.

Newtonmore - flattish but not bad

Aviemore - Spey Valley course is new Dave Thomas course that has some really nice holes although lacks the charm of some of the other older courses.

Sean,

Probably not too far off that path but for something special that I haven't played (so a Hidden Gem) I could be a bit more willing (but probably not more than 2 hours out of the way total). I was thinking about leaving Manchester in the AM and just driving straight through so an all day trip.  Then I thought maybe play somewhere just out of Manchester on the way out then stop at Gleneagles for the evening, play Kings the next AM and then get to Inverness the following afternoon/evening.  I thought I remember someone on the site mentioning an interesting place around the Lancaster/Morecambe area.  I am really not sure what is really between there and Carlisle and Glasgow.  I want to be in Inverness the evening after the day I leave Manchester so it has to be pretty close to the route and I don't want to miss a day of golf.

Thanks Sean!!

I used to live in Carlisle, so I agree with Niall.

Carlisle, Penrith both decent. Brampton also not bad and not far off the path.

Silloth very good (best of those discussed here), but a bit further out of the way again.

At the end of your drive, between Perth and Inverness, a stop off at Boat of Garten is a must if you haven't played it.  Its just a couple of miles off of the A9.

Martin,

Silloth is a great idea. Thanks!!

Niall,

I think your ideas are going to make me take a bit more time on the way up.  Thanks!!

David,

Thank you, it has been a while since I played there last.  A great idea.

I might be doing a few 18 drive 18 drive days with all these great ideas!!!

What about Seascale?  It is out of the way relative to the others but I believe this is the one I was thinking of in an earlier post.

Has anyone played Morecambe?  A search on this site didn't come up with much.

Thanks.

Seascale has an excellent post from Scott.  Makes me want to get there as well.

How many days will it take me to get to Inverness given all the great options on the way?  4 and counting it seems............. Hahahahahahaha

Manchester then Windermere GC (http://www.windermeregolfclub.co.uk/) Sporty course but some changes since

Jim,

Silloth is very special and will only cost you £45 or so.

Not sure of your plans the day prior, but you could leave in the evening from Mancs, stay in Carlisle, play Silloth in the AM and then head north.

Okay - given two hours off the path - must stop choices:

Prestwick
Western Gailes?
North Berwick

Jim:

Take David K's  advice -- if you're on the A9, Boat of Garten is a ridicously easy detour (5 minutes at most?) off the main road, and yet the course has a wonderful isolated sense of itself -- you, the course, the mountians and the Spey River, that's it.  Of the central Highland courses mentioned -- Newtonmore, Kingussie, Aviemore -- the Boat is the far superior. A really good course.

One other -- again, very close off the A9 near Stirling -- is Melvyn's recommendation of Bridge of Allen, a wee 9-hole course that nonetheless was designed by Old Tom Morris and is faithfully maintained to its original design, from reports. Again, very convenient off the A9, and a round there couldn't be more than 1-1/2 hours.

A word about "detours" off Scottish roads (which influences my recommendations) -- what may appear to be on a map as a "short" detour can often be quite lengthy, time-wise. There is little that is quick in getting around Scotland (one of its joys, actually) unless you are on the main highways. It's your time, of coure, and I don't mean to deter from many of the fine recommendations here. But you'll spend at least half a day getting to the coasts from your central route planned here.

Phil -

I am all for playing Boat of Garten, but it is more like 15 minutes off the A9 highway if you are driving north. ;)

Phil,

Thank you very much. Very fine advice. Bridge of Allan and Boat of Garten seem like musts. I think I might be taking it a bit slower and enjoying a bit more than I originally planned. Thank you.

On reflection, I doubt that many if indeed any of my list would be "must plays" but then again to my mind the "must play" list would be very very short indeed. What I can say is that those courses listed, at least those that I have played which is the majority, are really good fun courses.

If it was me, I might be tempted to play one of the courses earlier in the trip as its better to play golf when you are relatively fresh as opposed to having spent 4hours behind the wheel beforehand.

All the best with the trip.

Niall,

Thanks.  I spent a lot of time looking at the sites and digging around on your ideas and I think they are wonderful suggestions.  I think your view that they are "really good fun courses" is very helpful. I really am trying to expand beyond what I would normally do and your suggestions (as well as everyone else) are expanding my mind.  To experience something that I wouldn't have experienced is special and a "must play" in my mind (of course it does have to be good and fun). Originally I was thinking of Gleneagles (Kings and Queens) which are very fine but I have played them multiple times. Yours and others are expanding my mind with fine suggestions. I am confident it will be enjoyable thanks to you and everyone else.

Your idea about watching out for the long drive is well thought.  Given the wonderful suggestions I believe I will be able to play and drive a bit and play and drive a bit as the golf courses along the way offer great variety and optionality.

I thank you for your insight and concern and I appreciate all your advice for this wonderful journey.

Did you ever play Stoneyholme while living at Carlisle ? For an inland muni its a hoot and great value also, particularly if you don't mind the rubbish tees. I'd a regular game there on a tuesday night with a group from the pub and the course together with the crack with the boys just about made it worth missing a round at Silloth.

I loved Stoneyholme ! What a fun little track designed by Frank Pennink I think. I also really enjoyed Penrith and Brampton, never got to play Carlisle which was a shame.

You make it sound like you're barred from the country, surely you can sneak back in for a game ! How are things going on the new course ?
