Swinley Forest - 20th February 2012?
« on: January 10, 2012, 06:09:44 AM »
Morning all,

For the last couple of years we've had a day out at Swinley Forest for GCA but of late I have struggled to have time to organise this day (reserved by the club each year) for us.

In speaking to Swinley Forest this week the date of Monday 20th February 2012 is still available so I wanted to offer it up here to the GCA members (and apologies for the short notice)

Here is the link to the day held last year;

http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,42247.0.html

And a few photo tours to highlight the course;

The cost for this would be £110.00 and if there is sufficient interest I would be happy to help organise this day again but if we struggle for confirmed numbers I'd release the day back to the club.

So please could you let me know if you would like to attend this day so I can gauge numbers this week. Apologies to our overseas members (that were well attended and very welcoming last year) for the shortness of the notice period here.

Gareth sadly  just can't commit at this time and won't know for a week or so.

Thanks for offering.

Good luck
Let's make GCA grate again!

Thanks Tony.

As mentioned I'm not sure this day is viable as yet and really depends on the response I get in, say, the next week or so. If there is not sufficient interest (understandable given the lead time) then I will unfortunately not be able to commit to organising the day once again this year.

Regards,
Gareth

Gareth,

Thanks for arranging this again. Thanks to you, getting to play Swinley a couple of years ago was a real pleasure. However, I may be struggling this year I'm afraid so will have to give it a miss.

Hope you get enough interest for it to go ahead! Maybe next year for me?

Cheers,

James

Hi Sean and Happy new year to you.

Plan would be pretty much identical to last year so as per the post from 2011. In summary we would have the club/course pretty much to ourselves and the option for 36 holes if the light/time allow for that.

Thoughts?

I would love to have joined up with some GCA’ers and by chance was almost in the area at the right time as I will be staying in London the week before. (I live in Edinburgh)  Sadly however it will not be possible to extend my stay to the 20th.

I hope this does not take this thread too OT, but just wondering if anyone is able to advise on reaching courses from the centre of London. As when I stay there I was thinking about trying to get to one of the sand belt course like Worplesdon, woking, Addington, hankley common etc. I have never played any of the better inland courses so was looking to expand my experience.

Only really looking for some quick advice on the feasibility of reaching them by public transport and maybe a short taxi ride?

Ross - the 3 Ws and New Zealand are all 30 minutes by fast train from Waterloo and a £5 cab ride to the course. All are superb and a wonderful day out. Hankley is probably a £15 ew taxi from Farnham again from Waterloo. Addington can be reached by train to East Croydon from Victoria or London Bridge and tram to New Addington followed by a 15 minute up hill walk to the club.

I really need to let the club know this week if the day can be taken or not. Thus far I have around 6-8 "maybe's" and that's not really enough to make a financial commitment to the club 1 month ahead of the day so it looks more likely that the minimum (they have advised 16-18 ideally) is not attainable.

So very sorry to say but it looks like this day will not go ahead for us this year.  :(

Gareth, a shame it wont be going ahead this year.

If there is any chance of getting a date next year, would it be possible to look at posting a thread seeking interest, 2 or 3 months before? A little more notice might pick up a lot more interest?

Though I couldn't have made it this year anyway, thanks for your efforts!

Cheers,

James
