You had to be there....
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:37:04 PM »
Another silly game....

If I posted a picture of the Church Pews you would all know it's Oakmont.  If you see a wicker...Merion.  Well how about some things were if you haven't been there...you may not know where "there" is.

Anyone recognize this little display?  Good luck!

I haven't been there but it has to be ANGC

When I do have the pleasure of visiting ANGC, I would never dream of snatching photos on property for fear of banishment.

Try again  ;)

Nor is it Atlantic Athletic Club....good luck!

Somewhere in Texas? Ben Hogan's green jacket? Looks like a former Masters winner display at their home club. Judging by the steel shafts the player was either in hogans era or not long after?

The Jacket does not belong to Ben Hogan but it does have ties to Mr. Hogan. It is not residing in Texas.

NOTE: This is an authentic, Champions Jacket.  Not a reproduction.  It's owner also played on two Ryder Cup teams.

Your church pews and wicker hints led me astray.

I doubt I would fear banishment at ANGC either.

They claim their green jackets are not allowed off the property. I guess you have endangered your self to banishment for letting people know one escaped. :)

From what I've heard there are three Champions Jackets not on property at ANGC.  This one.  One of Gary Player's which is said to be at his club in South Africa.  Another is a supposed Bobby Jones Jacket that was sold at auction to an unknown buyer and it's whereabouts are now unknown...probably back home (if it was real).

Ohio is right, I am pretty sure.

But not Ohio State, or Jack.

I'm sure this Green Jacket has some tales to tell...

I'm guessing that this display is right down the hall from the club's 'card room.

OK, i feel like it has to be one of these two, but fascinated to hear the story behind the story:

1. Herman Keiser - won '46 masters beating Hogan by 1.  died in Ohio, had a driving range in Ohio, was a PGA professional at Firestone Country Club at one time, but only played on one Ryder Cup Team
2. Henry Picard - won the '38 masters, credited with helping Hogan by telling him to weaken his grip, played on two Ryder Cup teams, was a PGA professional at one time at Canterbury in Ohio

Then my final answer is Henry Picard.

However, the medal in the middle of the picture looks like a war medal and Herman Keiser was in the Navy for WWII

BTW

Church pews would not conclude Oakmont. Nor, would wicker basket conclude Merion.

True....but both are famously synonymous with each club.  Sorry you were misled.

Henry Picard is correct.  The Jacket is beautifully displayed at Canterbury Golf Club (Cleveland, OH) where Mr. Picard served as Head Professional for many years.  The Picard Cup, a national amateur invitational, is held annually in his honor.  I'll let Mr. Bill McKinley fill you in on the details of what accompanies the Jacket within the display.

Joe, thanks for the Trivia question that caused me a slight diversion from much less interesting material.  I learned quite bit in my 20 minutes or so of research to find the answer.
