How about 11 at Shinnecock (assuming you miss the green)?

Kind of meant to be a bit funny, but also serious.

From The East End of Long Island (and Southold Town)
2 and NGLA when you play the course for the first time and are told where you have to aim your second shot.

4 at Fisher's Island, aiming for that flag which is seemingly out in the water to a punch bowl green is special.

11 at Sebonack. Walking to the crest of the hill and seeing the green and beach down below.

How about the 2nd shot on Sahara at Old Macdonald? Not so much the 2nd shot, but the climbing over the crest for the first time and getting the wide view.

(For "Oh Wow" third shots...how about reloading on the 16th at Cypress?)

A"reveal" that includes nearly  the entire course from one vantage point.  I'm ashamed I didn't think of that one.

Brian,

You are right - it has to be 5 at NSW by a street. You can never forget the first time you crest that hill and see what is beyond.

If we're talking about pure undiluted "OH WOW" Second shots then New South Wales - Number 5 - just a beautiful shot in every respect.

But really none of the subsequent ones can compare to NSW hole 5 - it is the weakest my knees have felt when coming over the brow of a hill on any course.

Here you go Brian!

I think my favorite, and it's a "wow" shot for me, is the 8th at Prairie Dunes.
Depending on your tee shot you could have all or very little of that devilish green in view.
The big bunkers front right and the tall prairie grass behind just do it for me. I know it doesn't have the ocean, but I have felt damn excited to hit that shot the few times I have had the chance, whether it's from 210 or 97.
181 holes at Ballyneal on June, 19th, 2017. What a day and why I love golf - http://www.hundredholehike.com/blogs/181-little-help-my-friends

A few that immediately come to mind for me;

#5 at Cypress Point
#13 at Cypress Point
#16 at Pasatiempo
#4 at Royal Melbourne West
#6 at Royal Melbourne West

Further to my choices listed above, I'm going to add a few others and include photos. Apologies for not showing photos of CPC - the Club asked me not to upload photos to the internet. They made my dream come true - how could I possibly do the wrong thing by them!

#16 at Pasatiempo....

#4 at Royal Melbourne West (taken on the Wednesday practice day of the Presidents Cup)....

#6 at Royal Melbourne West (also taken on the Wednesday practice day of the Presidents Cup)....

#9 at Pebble Beach (the 8th wowed me more but I remember thinking "wow" when standing in this spot with a 4-iron in hand, or perhaps it was the perfect blue sky and blinding white sand)....

#7 at Old Macdonald (straight into a three club wind!)...the view from atop the green is better though!....

I have to agree with 5 NSW, until this point you see the sea but there are no great views until you get to the top of the slope and it opens up before you.

I must confess first time I went "b@llox!" as my ball had stopped 6' from the end of the ledge leaving 220yds to the green. A couple of weeks later I went "WOW!" as the view was not only still beautiful but I'd made the downslope and gained 80yds of roll.

6 NSW must win the award for blandest hole in fabulous location.

Pat Craig's mention of the 2nd at Lawsonia is a good one.  I was certainly struck when I got to the top of the hill and saw the green and barn below.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Ballyneal 4th tee box.  The reveal of the expansive chop hills is impressive

Sand Hills 18th tee box.  The huge blowout bunker on the left, the saddle green atop the dune, Bench's Porch above on the ridge line

Royal Portrush 5th tee box and then 2nd shot.  What a golf hole!

Greywalls 1st tee box.  You immediately get a sense of the scope of the place, the rock outcroppings and undulations.

Pacific Dunes' walk from 3rd green down to the 4th box.

The walk back to Old Head's 18th tee.  Beneath the lighthouse.

Eight at Pebble probably wins in a runaway.

I also vote for the shot following a cold top off the first tee in any club championship.

Two holes that go together very well are the 3rd and 4th at Silloth (do you know, you can never mention Silloth often enough). Indeed the whole journey from the middle of the fairway on the first to the approach on the 4th is a voyage of discovery.

I've always loved the second shot on the 16th hole at Ballyneal up through the gap to the green complex set against the horizon.  I never get tired of that view and the decisions with which the golfer is faced.

Augusta National Golf Club is the king of the Oh Wow Second Shot:

The 3rd - what exactly am I shooting at?
The 5th - what exactly am I shooting at?
The 7th - is there really a green up there among the bunkers?
The 8th - and I thought Fenway Park featured the Green Monster!
The 9th - stay below the hole, but not 70 yards short of the green.
The 10th - are you kidding me - a long iron uphill from a hanging lie?
The 11th - remember Hogan, Mize and Ray Floyd
The 12th - I'll take anything on the green and a 5 - anybody have a ball retreiver?
The 13th - Mickelson or Patton?
The 14th - What exactly am I shooting at?
The 15th - do I really want to leave a short pitch from a downhill lie over water?
The 18th - dammit, another 3 putt.

I also like the 4th at Bandon Dunes - turn the corner and voila, the Pacific Ocean!
Nice call on the 9th at Pebble Beach  Golf Links,  the hardest shot in golf I've ever faced.

8th at Pebble Beach and 16th at Pasatiempo were the first that came to mind for me.

The second shot to me on the 8th at Prairie Dunes is an "oh wow" shot, but not the view. I'm its something you think about since the first tee, since those holes are right next to each other.

I think there are two good categories for OH WOW! second shots.

1) Where the visual is the key even if the golfer has no clue about the architecture.

2) Where the knowledgeable golf architect aficionado appreciates the shot to be played (although there visual may still be stunning, as well.

Category #1:  #8 @ Pebble, #8 @ Fishers and #'s 9 & 10 @ Pebble have already been mentioned.  Obviously, the presence of the ocean adds a lot to the visual impact of OH WOW!  I would add several holes at Casa de Campo and #13 at ANGC to that list.  Also, #8 @ Dornoch and #9 @ Maidstone deserve inclusion.  The Golf House Club at Elie has at least one approach shot that, like #8 @ Fishers, has the ocean as the background.

Category #2: The OH WOW! is in the appreciation for shot that must be played irrespective of the view.  There are hundreds of candidates for that and my nominees include: #'s 8, 13, and 15 at PVGC, #'s 5 and 18 at Merion, #'s 3 and 8 at NGLA, #'s 8-10 at Pebble, the short uphill par 4 at Cypress (#8?), #'s 9,10 and 13 at Shinnecock, #'s 9 and 10 at Maidstone, #18 at TOC if there's a big crowd around the green, #10 at Riviera, #'s 3, 5, 10, 11, 13 and 15 at ANGC, several at Seminole (not just #6), #18 at TPC Sawgrass, #14 (Foxy) at Dornoch............the list is long and gets longer every year, it seems

I love the second shot into #6 at Wild Horse.  After an uphill, semi-blind tee shot, the green sits slightly below the golfer.  Depending on where you are at in the (hopefully!) Fairway, the next can be blind or wide open.  I love not knowing what awaits until you find your tee shot.

18th at Merion or 18th at Lookaway??

The history of the second shot at Merion always has me thinking of Hogan.  Lookaway is just a nice shot to a pretty green.
