Of course, it's not too early to pre-order "From Fields to Fairways: The Classic Golf Clubs of Minnesota" (due out next spring) by our own Rick Shefchik. As the possessor of a proof of the book, I'm well-qualified to tell you that it's a steal at $26.10 from Barnes & Noble, if you have any interest in the golf courses of Minnesota. Cf. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/from-fields-to-fairways?store=ALLPRODUCTS&keyword=from+fields+to+fairways

Unfortunately, "From Fields to Fairways" won't be published in time for Christmas, but you should be able to get it by March. Here's another link:

http://www.amazon.com/Fields-Fairways-Classic-Clubs-Minnesota/dp/0816677328/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_1

And you don't need to know or care much about Minnesota to enjoy it, since there's plenty of new (or very obscure) information about Ross, Raynor, Tillinghast, Bendelow, Park, Watson, Foulis, Strong and a number of other figures from the early days of golf. One of my favorites is the story about how Ralph Barton came to meet and work for Seth Raynor.

Funny thing about that cover...the first time I saw that photo (Bobby Jones teeing off on the 7th hole at Interlachen during the 1930 U.S. Open) I thought, "That's the cover." When I showed it to my editor, he wasn't too interested in it. Five hundred pictures later, it made the cut for the final 10, and then the board chose it for the cover.

I think I see Pat Mucci in that cover photo...

Off to find Mike Clayton's RM book...
Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

Golf Digest's Ron Whitten wrote a blog post (http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-courses/blogs/wheres-matty-g/2011/12/three-golf-books-worth-your-mo.html) on three newish golf architecture books, two of which have been discussed on GCA:

1. Lipouts…The Best I Could Do From the First Two Years; an anthology of early columns written by golf architect Nathan Crace in 2001 and 2002 for the regional Tee to Green Magazine

2.  Discovering Donald Ross, by Brad Klein

3.  The Nature Faker -- William S. Flynn, Golf Course Architect, by Wayne S. Morrison and Thomas E. Paul.  The book/CD was the focus of Ran's feature interview with Wayne and Thomas in April (http://www.golfclubatlas.com/feature-interview/wayne-morrison-april-2011-2/)

Strictly speaking not a Christmas present but a book I bought during the summer and I'm only now getting round to reading.

Peter McEvoy's autobiography, "For Love or Money". For those that don't know, McEvoy was the preeminent UK amateur in the late 70's early 80's, won consecutive Amateur Championships, played in the Walker Cup on several occasions, played in the Open with Nicklaus and Player no less, the Masters with Nicklaus and Snead and also with Lyle, Seve and Woosie in their amateur days.

He also briefly was an agent and latterly has been involved in gca. I'm about a quarter of the way through his book and its fascinating getting his memories and insight into some of the greats he played with. He doesn't pull any punches without being gratuitius. So far an excellent read. I look forward to seeing what he has to say on design.

I found some Kyle Phillips signed copies of St. Andrews, The Old Course & Open Champions.  It's a bargin if only for Kyles drawing of the Old Course.  I lent my original copy to a club member at a course I was doing some work at because his son was going to compete at a world jrs event and never got it back (rumor was it was being passed around the club and was lost track of).
This time I was smarter and got several copies!
