Summer/Winter pictures
« on: December 26, 2011, 05:47:33 PM »
Here in the Bay Area our golf courses look more or less the same year-round.

Maybe for this reason (and because I grew up in San Diego) I have a hard time seeing a picture of a golf course in winter and imagining it in summer, or vice versa. I love seeing the contrast in looks too.

So, here's the request/challenge: post your pictures of the same hole or same view - one taken in the summer(ish), the other taken in winter(ish). I'll consider an unofficial award for the pictures with the most stunning contrast between seasons!  ;D

Matt,

Here is a set of one of the most recognizable holes in the world: #12 at ANGC.

#12 in February 2010 after a rare Southeast snowstorm.  Notice there is no snow on the green itself as it is equipped with an internal heating system.

Just a photo I found on Google Image Search.

That photo in the snow caused quite a stir.  Last I heard they had not found out the source of the photo and if it was an employee or a member they are no longer there.  It's ridiculous IMHO.

Mike,

I have never heard that story but, it does not surprise me.  A friend of a friend did his internship there for Brad Owen, and was required (like all employees) to sign a confidentially agreement as a condition of employment.  Sounds like working at The Firm.

WOW! That hole photographs far better than it plays. And those mountains in the winter pic are quite striking.

Summer/winter photos of courses in the south can be dramatically different because of dormant bermuda.

Historic aerials taken in the winter of dormant courses are more revealing. Shadows against the white dormant grass will indicate more terrain features than you can see if the aerial was taken in the summer. Part of that is also the lower angle of the sun.

Nice scenes men. I'll bet that Winter Augusta photo did cause quite a stir.

Can you spot the four Augusta caddies hidden in that snowy landscape of #12? ;D

Confidentiality agreement...no shock there, at all.

Cheers,

"I said in a talk at the Dunhill Tournament in St. Andrews a few years back that I thought any of the caddies I'd had that week would probably make a good golf course architect. We all want to ask golfers of all abilities to get more out of their games -caddies do that for a living." T.Doak

Too funny that someone always misses the point of the thread...where are the summer pictures?

Is it me or do the two sets of mountain ranges in the Rancho set look completely different? The angle is virtually the same, yet one has a much taller, central peak than the other.

I think you'll find that the second shot is taken from a point twenty feet higher and 30 yards further along the fairway. I can get hold of the topos if you like..............................

The taller central peak is left of center in the Summer shot and right of center in the Winter shot.

Ridiculous indeed: I have seen a few photos on the net of holes at Augusta not looking their very best whereas this is a beautiful, unblemished winter scene - is the controversy surrounding the evidence of the heating system?

Most likely, that's not the case as the sub-surface heating systems have been used extensively in sports turf for the past 10-15 years.  Off the top of my head I know Cleveland Browns Stadium and Target Field (Minnesota Twins) have similar systems.  It has really only been in the last five or so years that they began installing them on putting greens.  Believe it or not, sub-surface refrigeration/air conditioning is also becoming popular with some elite courses as well.  No doubt some good tools that have been shown to be effective but, at a very high price.

Better late than never! Had the chance to take som snow covered pictures yesterday and remembered this thread. The light is a little flat on the winter pictures but anyway, i think they fit the purpose.
