MacKenzie at Alwoodley
Crump at Pine Valley (with a little help from others)
Fowler at Walton Heath
Abercromby at Worplesdon
Markes at Sandy Lodge (with advice from Vardon)

Who else started at the top?

Two of these, Crump and Markes, never designed another course. Are there other one-course-wonders?

Though not a one-course-wonder, Hugh Wilson started at the top.  (sorry to re-introduce more Merion drama :) )

I thought Wilson was responsible for Pirate Golf in Myrtle Beach, before he shifted gears to full-size course(s)?

We don't know exactly what Colt did at Rye, but he was involved in the early design.  I think this is starting at the top.

I heard he designed the old Rooftop Golf at Belmar Playland (in NJ) on Ocean Ave.  Classic layout.  It's since been renovated.

My first job was working for Pete Dye at Long Cove.  That was starting at the top, as far as I am concerned.

If an architect really does his best work on his very first project, then either:

(a)  He only ever did one course,
(b)  His helpers should get far more credit than they are getting,
(c)  He only ever had one good piece of property to work on, or
(d)  He shirked his responsibilities on future projects.

Everyone should get better at their craft as they gain experience.

Tom,

You started at the top or Pete did?

I would think The Golf Club would be considered a better effort of his, no?

Cheers
