Dan,
Royal Perth is decent and full- sized - at 78 acres. It is possible.

Mike (and others),

What makes it possible? How does/did an architect get a golf course into a property that small? Any routing tricks?

No lie!

I just used that tool to outline Town & Country (leaving out the clubhouse), and it came to 99.62 acres!

It's damned close to 99.62 acres, anyway.

Keller, too, is almost exactly 100.

Using that tool I get approx. 111 acres for Paraparaumu Beach GC.

I recently did an 18 holer on 72 acres, it is a bit tight in a couple of places, equally there are some spacey areas. 7 par 3 holes help reduce the parcel size, a par 3 can be on 1 acre 150 yards x 30 yards. What you can do much of in small parcels is have dog leg holes and the course will tend to find similar directions and directions at 180 degrees, you wont put playing holes in all different directions. As a rough guide a corridor is 70 yards which is 1 acre so a 420 yard hole occupies 6 acres, stick 14 of those in and 4 short holes, you can do it.
A combination of whats good for golf and good for turf.

Rolling Road GC - Catonsville, MD - designed by Willie Park Jr in the early 20s. The tee shot on one of the holes, the 11th I think, plays directly over the 10th green.

Based on the size, I included.  It is not a great track, but fun and right in the heart of Miami Beach.

Joel,

Wannamoisett is +/- 110 acres, including clubhouse, parking & maintenance yard.

P.Craig.

How is it possible to get Royal Perth onto 78 acres?
They get everything very close together. There are two holes - 4 and 8 - at either end and the rest are parallel to each other.
The parallel holes that run right up to (as close as it is possible) the edges of 4 (3,5,16,17) come close. So do the holes that come right to the edges of 8 (7,9,12,13 and 18)
The short holes are snuggly fit into places where they just fit - but it could very easily be a 14 hole course where the par threes were avoided.
In other words - it would be simple and a short walk from 1 to 3 (avoiding the short 2nd) from 5 to 7, from 9 to 11 and from 12 to 14.
And, there are several holes right into the very corners of the property.

9-holers? ;D

Sorry Tim. 18 hole, Par 70+, regulation golf courses.

What a horrible word Mr. Craig. Shame on you ;) There are quite a few super 18 hole courses in the uk that are on less than 100 acres but also under a par 70. I always like Halifax West End.

Is it any better since the renovations (Art Hills?)?  I only played it before the work.

Valley Club is 95 acres (possible contender for BEST course under 100?), and Claremont comes in at 82.

Inside or outside the fenceline on T&C. My understanding was always 90 acres for the golf course.

Looks like around 70 acres -- including the storm sewers, or whatever it is that separates the holes.

I think Greg Norman's Tiburon course at Doral was on 97 acres...

A question, what is the acreage of the Old Course (without the Open tees)

According to the Links Trust, it's 120 acres (not sure about which tees, but that doesn't effect the boudaries of the course much, does it?), which was more than I was guessing.

Hi Andy,

Who did you speak with at the Links Trust? I measured the area of the course pretty accurately for my book (see page 173) and the answer was 38.5 Hectares which = 95.1 acres.

Therefore it must be the hands-down winner of this question.

From the Links Trust FAQ page:

18. What is the total area of the Old Course?
120 acres. Combined acreage of all our courses including the 220 acre Castle Course is 870 acres.

http://www.standrews.org.uk/Frequently-Asked-Questions.aspx

Like I said, that seems way too big to me, but they should know! Maybe they're including some other land nearby for some reason?

Canals! Integral part of the course! (Particularly the Reverse course.....). Are the el tracks included? Should be...

I suspect the vast majority of UK course built before WWI that haven't been rerouted or new holes added will be under 100 acres, many quite comfortably so. I recall the Laird of Aberlour when treating me to a game at his home club showing me a map of the course on the wall and asking me how many acres it sat on. From memory I think the answer was c.80. While it won't make the top 100, still plenty of good golf in it.
