‘He has forgotten more about architecture than the rest of us combined will ever know.'

Ran,

When Pete used the word "us" he included himself, and as such I don't think he was referencing any living, practicing architect, and I don't believe that he would concede that Jack knows more about architecture than he does.

Ran never said when Pete said the above.

Lynn - OT, but were you to pick a coach to lead your college team, would it be Bobby K or (my pick) John Thompson?

Peter,I'd bet a large stack that his first choice would be John Wooden.

You really think Thompson is Knight's equal as a bench coach?

My top picks to lead a team?

John Wooden
Pete Newell
Coach K
Bobby Knight, before he went goofy

John Thompson would not be on my top 100.

Including Bobby Knight into this discussion of course refers to his famous post game media gathering when he said, "I have forgotten more about this f**king game than any of you are ever going to know."

Jeff, Lynn - oh, I knew it would be Coach Wooden first, and from what I have read it should be. And of course Bobby Knight and Coach K.  But the way Georgetown played the game, the players Coach Thompson recruited and how he melded those young men into a team, and the respect with which he seemed to deal with them as people -- anyway, I always liked that (as a young basketball player).  Mostly,  just liked watching college basketball most when a team like Georgetown was playing.  I defer to Lynn of course when it comes to understanding the nuances of the game and the strengths of coaches -- but I'm a sentimentalist, and for many years my heart was with Georgetown....

Peter,he didn't meld them into a team so much as melding them into a street gang. He's a racist bully and his teams were a reflection of that.Plus,he made Lefty Dreisell look like the second coming of Red Auerbach.

He was right,of course.

Still not as good a line as when he was asked if he was worried during a late comeback against LSU and said "not when I looked at the other bench and saw Dale Brown".

Jeff - I don't know if what you say is true or not, but I know I never saw or noticed any of that it the early 80s, watching him lead the team on a terrific run of success.  Big, tough guy - sure....but he seemed to treat his players with respect. And they played the game fast, whcih i liked.

I have to go with RTJ Sr.  I seem to remember him saying something like this in an interview when the interviewer denigrated some of RTJ's design work.
