Vacation destination
« on: December 03, 2011, 01:31:34 PM »
My wife and I were planning a Hawaii trip this July, but have played most of the courses there.  We probably will be gone a couple of weeks. She is at least as crazy about golf as I am.  Other than western Europe or down under what are your favorite destinations for both some golf and sightseeing.  We usually try to be first off in the morning, have lunch and sightsee in the afternoon.

Tommy:

South Africa is a wonderful, life changing trip.  And the golf is pretty good too (Humewood, Durban, Fancourt, Leopard Creek,etc....  I liked it so much 2 years ago that my family and I went back in July.

Paris is also a wonderful golf/sight seeing option....with St. Germain, Fountainbleau and Chantilly (and Morfontaine if you can swing it).

Another trip that I have made with great sight seeing and golf is to Alberta Canada.  Great hiking, beautiful hotels, fine food and wine and Stanley Thompson golf....really cool.

Send me an IM if I can provide you any more details.

Best,

Bart

Although I have yet to get there, I'd probably consider the Netherlands.

In July? Try a Baltic cruise that hit's the major Capital Cities.  The ships travel at night (although "night" is only a few hours longs and the extended daylight means you can be playing and still have lots of time for other things.

Marbella, in the Costa del Sol is hard to beat. I went to the Ryder Cup there and was quite transfixed.

What is this place for if it’s not for opinions?
Portugal been twice, yet to see the greatness.

Marbella been maybe 4x. If I want an old town I want one bigger than one square and if I want to go to  Fort Lauderdale (which actually I do) I won’t be heading back to Peurto Banus n(the port area).

If it’s to be Europe the most captivating, slightly off the normal trail, place I’ve found is Biarritz.

For a course profile see

If I’m honest I doubt there’s better than a Doak 4/5 but there’s a group of similar quality that would keep you busy for a week,  and in the afternoon’s...

Well  for a start you’re not really in France you’re in Basque territory.   If you want famous golfers I offer you Arnold Massay, Jose Maria Olazabal and  ... Seve.  The golfing culture in France is heavily biased toward men and women playing golf together. Many courses offer  a partner rate. Incroyable.

They really are different in these parts.  Getting to know the people is fascinating.

Bayonne is 20 mins on the Bus and has an Old Quarter much bigger than above plus a decent museum/art gallery. IN July you could catch the Tour de France at PaU – worth a visit by itself,  in  the Pyrenees. And St Jean de Luz is just down the road. Go 10 mins further an you are in Spain, San Sebastian and Bilbao are near..

I’m biased but I’ve travelled all over Europe and this is the only seaside town I’ve been two twice for a holiday (as an adult where golf was not the main factor- other resorts are avialable ;)).

Have fun CHOOSING.  If you do book Biarritz, let me know and I’ll send you more info on where to eat etc....

As I mentioned I am looking outside Western Europe. I have played and travelled
there a bunch.
I have only played two courses in South Africa and would love to return.
My wife has not been there.
Anyone play in Eastern Europe or Turkey?

Tommy-
Does it have to be July and have you been to Argentina?  There are some good courses around Buenos Aires; you can take the ferry across the Rio Plata to stay and play the Randy Thompson/Kelly Blake Moran course in Carmelo, Uruguay; and there are some pretty good courses in other spots (like the mountains or Mar Del Plata).  It's also a direct flight from Dulles.  But July is probably the worst month to go, since it's their winter -- you could still play, but it wouldn't be warm.
