Plans this winter to keep your golf game in shape??
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:34:31 PM »
As I'm entering my first Minnesota winter and not looking forward to three long months of cold, snow, and ice...I'm already looking forward to next year's golf season! :) As I was looking at a couple local golf domes as possible places to hit the occasional golf ball this winter, I was wondering what other Northern climate GCAers do to keep their games sharp. Trips to the range/dome? Carpet putting? Lessons? Nothing? Fitness routines?

Just curious as to what everyone has planned for this upcoming winter.

Thankfully you guys send us a constant current of warm water across the Atlantic which enables us to play golf 12 months of the year.

Having been born and raised in the Chicago area the winters can get long.  I try and do all of the above.  Having a teenage son who plays competitively helps.  Because of this I will be adding a hitting net and mat to my garage.  We also are big fans of the Dave Pelz Truth Board for putting.  A friend turned me on to it last winter.  From what I understand, they don't make them anymore so I bought mine on ebay.  Welcome to the North!

2 assumption fails, Pat:

1.  Winter in Minnesota only lasts 3 months (more like 5-6)

2.  My game is "in shape"
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Well, I played on Veteran's Day this year here in 50*+ weather and it was 60* here last week and courses were open, so I didn't count November. I also assumed that there is a chance of golf in March as there was plently of golf here reportedly two years ago at that time. But, even assuming no golf in March Dec 1 through April 1 that would be 4 months of winter...not sure how you're coming up with 6 months of winter :) ;)

You're exactly right, Pat. It will be just a quick four months -- a mere blink of an eye, I keep telling myself -- before we're playing again. As to how to keep the game in shape, I've found that to be impossible, but I will put in a lot of time on the elliptical machine this winter to keep my legs in shape.

Working out and stretching is always a good thing.  I would not hit too many balls without seeing ball flight.  I moved from LA to Ohio.  During my first winter, I set up a net with  a range mat.  I hit thousands of balls and kept tinkering with my swing.  In March, I went to the driving range and had a 40 yard hook with my lob wedge!!  Chip on your carpet, it will make you feel contact and compress the ball.  You will also see a "mini" ball flight.  Do some slow motion swinging like Harvey Penick recommends.  Lastly, when spring rolls around you can get back to the basics.....grip, posture, and alignment.  The most important things.  I hope that helps.

For me, winter is the best time of year to make swing changes.  I take lessons and hit balls at the Braemar dome.  I prefer the dome over the indoor/outdoor range because it is warmer, closer and cheaper.

Winter is a good time to modify the putting stroke but I have screwed up my stroke by getting too creative based on reading the latest book.  What works well in the basement does not necessarily work well with a bet on the line.

I also try to work out in the winter.  I'm trying Pilates this year.

Here in Green Bay, WI, we had a range that was a series of doors like those storage units sort of facilities.  They each had a heater and driving range mat, and we hit balls out into a nice field of snow.  They jerryrigged a ball gatherer that was pulled behind a snow mobile or ATV that pulled a roll of pliable rubber dual disked that trapped the balls and popped them up into gathering bins.  It worked pretty well.  Similar like Steve Stricker that famously has a 3 sided trailer with a tarp that rolls down, and a heater and a full swing studio inside where he hits balls out into the snow in Madison.  It seems to work for him.

Unfortunately, our great winter facility driving range and golf shop was a casualty of the economy.

I just started my winter YMCA workouts today, that I do not go to in golf season.  I kid myself that walking golf 2-4X a week is enough.  But it really isn't.  I find I loose a percentage of my strength over the golf season.  So, I try to build up a little during winter.  I'm going to try to go somewhere warm for a week or so mid winter.

What ticks me off about winter layoffs, is you can chart my golf handicap like clock work.  I go into a slump mid-late summer, and mysteriously I shoot my best scores the last few weeks.  Same this year.  I often wonder if I lived south if I could keep it going and improve over winter, or have a mid-winter slump, requiring a slump-buster.  :P ::) ;D

When living in the north, I found that I played a lot more during the spring/summer/fall than I do now that I've lived in the south for the past 3 years.  Because of this, I generally played better golf.  I never did anything in the winter besides hit balls into a net but always played well in the Spring.

Now I just play sporadically all year long and never really improve.

I wait for the snow to melt while waiting for Arizona to come around in March. That way all you have are positive swing thoughts after watching golf on TV all winter.

Too bad it doesn't really translate to low scores. But its the thought that counts  ;)

Pat, I think all the above help, and that depends on whether you have a weakness.  Personally, I really don't like hitting for too long in a dome as it doesn't give me a true idea of how I'm hitting it, and I get more anxious for the season.  I won't really go to the dome until maybe Feb/March before a trip to somewhere warm.  Putt and chip on carpet, but those get old as well.  Will try to stay in shape.

Down here on the Gulf Coast, my winter plan is to play a couple of times a week and hit balls at least once.

Imagine Will Ferrell singing "My glutes, my glutes, my lovely golfer glutes!" I'm doing a series of pieces with a local fitness instructor, TPI certified, as a guinea pig. She has me focusing on firing my glutes during my swing. Before last month, I couldn't have identified them in a line-up nor separated them from my hamstrings.

Yet...golf season is not over.

Carpet putting 5 footers ad nauseum while watching hockey on tv....isn't that what all Canadian golfers do in the winter?

RJ,

When we moved to SE TX from NW Ohio 20 yrs ago, I gradually went from an 18 to a 5 index over several years.. I attributed that to playing ~130 times per year and short game skills..  I found that i needed to take off two weeks maybe 2-3 times a year to not burn out.. not necessarily in the winter..

Golf season is definitely not over.  I did a late afternoon nine in New Jersey today....in shorts and a golf shirt....and I broke a sweat.  70 degrees as I got out of my car at 3:15PM.

Today was the first time I'd touched a club in almost a week, I hate being out when it's in the 50's. Seriously guys, move down here, golf all year and cost of living is cheaper.

Mahaffey and I are going to run Tough Mudder Texas Coast to stay ready for next year's trip to Long Island.   I also plan to rake my yard twice daily so the Renaissance interns don't kick my ass again next spring.

After watching, and trying to keep up with, Slawnick double time it as he laid out the hole corridors at DRII, I'd think he'd be a candidate for the tough mudder. Not sure how he'd feel about crawling on gravel under barbed wire, swimming thru ice water, or running through a spider web of electrified wires as water is sprayed on you, but I know he's got the stamina to do the 12 miles.
