Golf year in review *** the numbers crunch
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:51:03 AM »
This time I am not wondering how many rounds you have played in 2011, but how many different courses in different geographical area's. For me it was a great year with some great new experiences including jasper, Royal Colwood, Swinley, Hankley Common and Rye and Cruden Bay, Nairn, Murcar and Royal Aberdeen being the highlights.

In total I have played 34 different courses during the year;

Canada: 8
Scotland: 5
Belgium: 3
England: 4
Netherlands: 14

It seems that your Highlights are pretty much from the same region.  What was it that you liked about these that the others let you down on? Or are you just name dropping to impress the treehouse?

New Zealand-1-Napier Golf Club
Australia-2- Lost Farm and St Andrews Beach

Not many but the quality was excellent particularly those in Aussie.

I only played in two countries...USA and Scotland.  Highlight of the year was Crail Balcomie.

The highlights are from western Canada, Scotland and England, so very different regions. I mentioned them because I played these courses for the first time in 2011. I don't know whether that is impressive, but I do know I feel like I had a very good golfing year.

  We have a winner!

My number is miniscule by comparison - US: 16, but that doesn't mean that I'm complaining.

I had no idea that unemployment checks could support this much golf.  Because there's no way you can keep down a job with numbers like that!   ;D

I'm about 40 played (and another 30 walked) on four countries so far in 2011. A fraction of 2010, but fingers crossed for next year.

A quick count shows 36 different courses that I can remember playing - all in the US.

I've played at least 15 rounds each on four of them.

I have never before tracked how many different GC's played in a year..only NEW (ie--never before seen) GC's played in a year.

A quick calculation shows 84 GC's played in 2011, 48 of which I had never visited previously.  (Might get 3-4 more newbies in come December.)

Didn't play in a new state this year (stuck on 41) but did play in 6 new countries--French Polynesia, NZ (once with Ash Towe) France, Spain, Wales, England.  Highlight of the year---Cape Kidnappers...nothing else a close second, though Royal Porthcawl and Royal Liverpool, Birkdale and Lytham/St/ Anne's were also stellar...

Interesting exercise.  I always count the number of states each year, but have never broken down courses played in each.  This year's projected new course total is 85 in 16 states.  Sadly for the 10th year in a row golf was only in the USA.

Alabama-       1
Delaware-      1
Florida-         12
Georgia-        8
Indiana-         1
Kentucky-      4
Louisiana-      1
Mississippi-      5
North Carolina-   30
New Jersey-   1
New York-      3
Ohio-      2
Pennsylvania-   3
South Carolina-   7
Virginia-      5
West Virginia-   1

Lots of us have been around this board for a long time and have seem some great runs. Huckster, Noel / Tuco, C, Chip G to name a few over the years that have seen lots of great courses.

IMHO no one has had a streak like this!!!

 Keep it going Mark!

I am amazed at how much golf some guys can play.  I just don't have it in me.  That said, I probably saw close to 30 different courses - nearly all in England and there will be more to come this year.  Maybe 10 were new for me - of which only a few weren't keepers.  Thinking on it, I didn't go to Wales this year, must be the first time in 12 years.

John, thanks.  I've had a great year and have enjoyed sharing pictures of a few of the courses with this board. Of course, I've also really enjoyed meeting and playing with several GCAers this year.

Unfortunately (fortunately?), new employment begins in January and I'll be happy with 20 rounds next year  :-[

Someone else will have to take the reins...

Fairly quiet year for me.

Only 16 new courses (about 25 in total - US and Australia), though 7 of the 16 were world top 50 and another two world top 100, so I still did alright for myself.

2012 is looking like it could be a decent year for golf if my plans come together.

Mark,

I'll retire in 2024, maybe I can give you a run for your money.  Then again, indications are that my government may not have a pension to give me by then.  Canada's like the cool upstairs room over a raucous party.  ;D

Looking at the numbers I realize I played more golf than I feel like I did.
28 new courses with a total of 36 unique courses on the year.  All courses on the west coast of the United States + Hawaii.

I played  35 different courses this year in 9 US states and one in Israel.

2012 highlights were the 4 courses at Bandon Dunes, an ace at Pumpkin Ridge (Ghost Creek) 3rd hole, Merion East, Baltusrol Upper (first time), The Knoll (West), Sleepy Hollow, Dellwood (n/k/a Paramount), Pete Dye course at Barefoot, The Dunes club (RTJ's in MB , not Keiser's), True Blue,  Southern Dunes (AZ, not FL), Vista Verde, We-Ko-Pa and Pete Dye's Caserea course in Israel. My low round of the year was at Neshaniic Valley in NJ. The year went by way too fast and I played way too poorly.

Some of the numbers in this thread are blowing my mind.

I'm lookin' at you, Saltzman! ;)

I played 19 different courses this year, 15 of which I played for the first time.  Here's the breakdown:

Canada - 5
Ontario: 5

USA - 14
Oregon: 4
NY: 5
Ohio: 5

Every US course I played was a "first-timer" for me.  Nary a dud in the bunch.

The numbers may not reflect it but I truly feel like the luckiest guy in the world after my amazing 2011.
