I was wondering if anyone has seen or played Wolf Creek Golf Club in Mesquite, Nevada?  Is it a course worth playing or looking into?  Or is it too much of a man made monster?

I played Wolf Creek the last time I was in Vegas.  It takes a little over an hour to drive there but it's well worth it. The layout is really remarkable with incredible vistas and dramatic elevation changes.  The downsides-  I think they're having some financial type problems, because the day I was there the serivce was pretty much non existent.  And after teeing off about 10 am, we had to endure a brutal 6 hr. round-  with no marshal to be found. But I'm still glad I played it because it is so unique. Also, I don't know how anyone else feels, but I think the golf in Vegas is way overrated.  My last trip I played Southern Highlands and Dragon Ridge and thought they were both very average despite all the hype I heard.

Lots of wildly differing opinions on this course - seems like a real love it or hate it type.

I have played Wolf Creek several times and love the layout because it flies in the face of conventional / classically designed golf.

The holes are literally routed through canyon land that simply defies description. It is truly mesmermizing and when people talk about how Shadow Creek was built the fanfare there is way overblown compared to the demands that the folks at Wolf Creek endured.

For those who favor "traditional" layouts it's best to avoid Wolf Creek. I have said on previous threads that Wolf Creek has it's own unique quirk. For those who want the classic designs of architects from the high point of the '20's, Wolf Creek will not be their cup of tea.

The best holes there include IMHO:

2nd -- try the extreme back tee for real v-e-r-t-i-g-o!
7th -- superb short par-4 that tempts the big tee shot
8th -- simply the hardest long par-3 many will ever play
13th -- superb short par-4 that ozzzzes with strategy
14th -- great long par-4 that exposes the great Nevada basin
17th -- dynamic risk'n reward par-5

Enjoy your time there -- Wolf Creek is like the rare Vegas act that makes you stand up and say WOW!!!

   Is it worth the $$$$$? I was intrigued to see it, until I found out what the green fee was.

The tariff for all Vegas golf is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to high!

For what it's worth -- try playing Wolf Creek when they offer a twilight fee -- I think they still offer one.

One other thing -- head further east to St. George in Utah for more affordable golf options like Entrada and Coral Canyon. From Vegas it's no more than just over two hours away.

Matt:  so true.  But isn't Wolf Creek also way more expensive than the other courses in Mesquite, also?  Yes Vegas golf is a joke price-wise, but Wolf Creek isn't in Vegas!  Unless things have changed since I was there two years ago, Wolf was so much more than others in Mesquite that it made it prohibitive.

And yes, one hour further to St. George and one hits one of the great bang for buck areas in this country.  Several wonderful courses up there, all reasonably priced.

Look at Wolf Creek as an "extension" of the Southwest price wars for playing golf.

Last I checked they weren't exactly giving golf away in SoCal either -- hello Pelican Hill, Torrey Pines, and let's not forget the area where Eastwood and friends play -- have an idea on where I'm referring!

Like I said before -- if people want their golf served with a "classic" style than no matter what Wolf Creek charges it will be one dollar too much.

I know people have barked about the cart rides but the terrain does call for some caution.

I know I really enjoy the course because you have holes and situations rarely encountered when playing. Anyone playing Wolf Creek when the spring winds come whipping up will have their hands full big time.

I'm not asking about the quality of Wolf Creek outside of price.  You've sold me there.  I kniow I'd enjoy it for sure.

But whereas in an area like Las vegas, or Orange County, or Monterey, EVERYTHING is overpriced (with a few notable exceptions), in Mesquite, the prices for the Oasis courses and Casablanca are all pretty reasonable, then you go up 50% to what Wolf charges.

That just seems to me to be excessive - a course that costs way more than others right near it.

And yes, I know, Pebble is like this also.  But it has a little history and other panache on its side to at least in some way justify it.

I just question whether Wolf Creek is worth paying THAT MUCH MORE than the other pretty damn good courses right near it... Based on price, would you recommend it that highly, even to a person who doesn't give a rat's ass about tradition and likes courses like this?

Good question.

If people are stuck on budget then Wolf Creek may not be possible. Just remember -- I have some friends that think $10 golf is still possible too!

The other golf options in Mesquite are really not worth the special efforst to see. I do like a few holes on Oasis (one of the better Palmer / Seay designs) but the totality, scale and routing of Wolf Creek is worth the price of admission IMHO.

When you ask about "tradition" -- frankly I could give a rats ass about "tradition." I play golf because of the different experiences I can encounter. Wolf Creek provides an experience that you just don't get in too many other locales. I'll say this again -- for those who want their golf in a perfectly linear and classic fashion the time at Wolf Creek will be a real disappointment and a budget breaker.

Wolf Creek is pricey because it took mega bucks to create what's there. Anyone standing behind the 18th green and gazing over the site will certainly come to the conclusion about that.

Huck -- I can't speak to other peoples tastes or pocketbook. As a golfer -- I would say without hesitation or reservation Wolf Creek is worth the price because you won't forget you were there.

Just note re "tradition" I meant those who don't care about the linear, classical golf you mention.  For those who do require this, I can't see recommending Wolf for them PERIOD, as you say.  I was just wondering that for guys who don't give a rat's ass about this - those who would be open to the wonders that Wolf gives - if even for THEM it's worth the price.

And you say it is, which is good enough by me.
