As Mike mentioned, I'm caddying this week, for the same player as last year. We made the cut on the number after a great birdie on 7 (8 iron to 10 feet) and a long putt across the green at 9. Then had 69 this morning, to leave us t30 with one round to play.
The first point to note about Allenby's whinging is that a player who has just missed the cut is rarely the best person to make a sensible judgment about the golf course. Second point is that Allenby is full of it, the greens are not the best surfaces the players will putt on this year, but they're fine. No one can seriously argue that good putts are missing the hole because of the quality of the greens.
From watching a bit of the golf live this afternoon (and some more on tv when we got home), it appears that the greens are finally starting to play firm. They were getting there this morning, but they were still softer than optimal. They are, however, significantly firmer than last year, when the course was battered with heavy rain for days on end before the tournament. Hopefully they're even firmer tomorrow.
Paul Gow's comment in Golf Digest about there being only three or four holes where there is an advantage to being on one side of the fairway is utter rubbish. During practice and tournament rounds this week, Matt and I have specifically discussed the preferred placement of the tee shot on holes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 17.
Another touring pro told me today that he thinks 2 is the best hole on the course. I might agree with him.
