Can anyone recommend any courses near Norwich - King's Lynn?
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:42:14 AM »
Friends of mine are moving to this area, from downunder, and I hoping to give them some idea of the type of golf courses in the area?

Any tips?

Hunstanton, Brancaster, Seacroft - links.
Woodhall Spa - heathland.
Sheringham and Cromer - downland.

Kings Lynn is nice but more mine you cant go past Royal Norfolk or Hunstanton as the best in the region.

Royal Worlington is closer (at least time wise) to Norwich than either Brancaster or Hunstanton, I think.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I suppose it's a reflection on the isolation of Norfolk, but I don't think I'd describe Woodhall as being in the area of Norwich. Must be close to a three hour drive on those roads...

But isn't Woodhall within 90-100 mins of Kings Lynn, Adam?

It's 50 miles and a tiring 90 minute drive to Woodhall Spa. Royal Worlington is 37 miles and just under an hour. Nothing is quick in this part of the world!

If they are likely to be long term and looking for a club then Kings Lynn and Hunstanton are good member clubs, Gordon Irvine has done some interesting work at Hunstanton this winter. Royal Worlington and Brancaster would be very tough to join without excellent contacts.

I suppose KL to Woodhall is easier. I spent two years working in Norwich in the early 2000s and while it's a very nice place, the time taken to get anywhere that isn't straight down the A11 is still very fresh in my memory.

Thanks

So between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton - what would be involved in joining for an Aussie?
Are they joining fees and annual subs?

Your mate should contact courses he is interested in joining.  It could make a difference on where he decides to set up house.  Anyway, Hunstanton would be a great place to be a member of.  Old fashioned links with a friendly membership.

Brett I'd advise you friend writing to the club, if he is on a fixed contract lots of clubs are open to a temp membership without an entry fee. Usually you can play in competitions but cannot win trophy events.

Whether he is after a temporary arrangement or longer term membership send a nice letter and enclose a reference from a home club if available. Offer to meet the committee, play with the Captain, etc.

Brett,

As Mark says, nothing is quick in this part of the World.

My wife used to live in the area before I knew her and we still visit friends of hers in a village called Snettisham. When visiting them I've wandered off to play golf at Brancaster, Hunstaton and Royal Worlington. Royal Worlington was a trek, should have been just over an hour, but was closer to an hour and 30 mins as I got stuck behind several slower moving vehicles. I've also made the trip to Brancaster which should be about 30 mins and its taken closer to an hour! The roads aren't quick, often narrow and many don't offer opportunities to overtake, so planning journey times is tricky.

Ben Stephens on here talks well of Kings Lynn, but I've never been able to draw myself away from the two links when in the area.

Where exactly will your friend be based and looking to live? Kings Lynn to Hunstanton wouldn't be a problem. Norwich to Hunstanton would be!

Cheers,

James

I have a friend who is a member of Hunstanton. If you IM me I'm sure I could put you in touch with him. If nearer to Norwich they might want to consider Royal Norwich or Eaton. If living inland they might also wish to consider Thetford - a very beautiful course, quite heathland in nature.

I am pretty sure he is going to be based in Kings Lynn, those narrow roads are interesting, but part of the daily or weekly trip maybe become a pain...They are not looking to move for a few months yet, but plan to stay for a few years at least.
