But Kalen, if you suggested he inquire about the back 9 at Pacific Grove in the middle of the afternoon (I assume by just elbowing your way into foursomes coming off the front 9), why not suggest that he ask to play holes 5 through 10 and 17 and 18 at Pebble?    ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Squirming on to Pebble...is a much more massive undertaking I suspect....than elbowing ones way on to the back 9 at PG,  ;)

If you're not going to play Pebble in the afternoon, my recommendation would be to not play at all. Savor your round at Cypress -- don't tack on a round at a course you're not going to remember and you wouldn't travel to play.

You'll enjoy Pasatiempo.

Good evening all,

New member to the group. My father and I are taking a trip out to the Carmel area in January and are fortunate enough to recieve an opportunity to play Cypress. I have never been to the area, and am looking to get some recommendations from the group of where else to play given our schedule below. I REFUSE to pay $500+ (absurd) to play Pebble, and Spyglass at $425+ is not too far away in the category of ridiculous. Based on our schedule below, I am definitely locked in on playing Pasatiempo, but am looking for one more recommendation of something off the path. Have read about Monterrey Penisula CC....thoughts anyone???
Am also open to any recommendations on lodging/accomodations in the area.

Schedule:

Sunday-- arrive in San Jose around 11:30....NEED RECOMMENDATION
Monday: Cypress at 7:30am.... thinking about Pacific Grove in the afternoon for fun...hear the back nine is a gem
Tuesday: Pasatiempo in the morning-- fly home in afternoon

Scott,

If you are not comfortable paying to play Pebble then don't.  I would advise you to work on becoming a rater and then playing for free.  Or better yet, do what I did, try to get good enough to qualify to play Pebble in an USGA event.  Just because I failed it made the journey no less exciting.

Personally, I would send Pete Galea a note at Pajaro.  Tell him you heard it from me and he will set you and your Dad up.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the recommendations. My father and I had a great experience.

Yes, Cypress was a soul-enrichening experience. There is nothing more that I can say about it that already hasn't been well-documented on this site.

I truly enjoyed Pacific Grove for both the mission of the facility and the great piece of land that the back 9 both sits on and was routed by Jack Neville. An unbelievable value for $20 for twilight!

Pasatiempo is a GREAT course. I just wish it didn't follow Cypress Point the next day because there was no chance of it truly breaking through. A return visit is needed. REALLY loved the back 9. MacKenzie is pure genius on holes 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18

Scott

Glad you enjoyed your trip - obviously with Cypress as the highlight. What were your favourite holes ?

To squeeze in PG and Pasa. as well was IMO a good call. I am with a few others here who suggested a walk around around PB as opposed to a play. I've been there a couple of times and never regret not paying the money to play it. Each to their own.
