The two recent RM books.  One by Mike Clayton and the other by John Green.

Niall:

If you want an amazing compliation of information re; the most underrated architect of the golden age, William Flynn, Wayne Morrison and Tom Paul's "The Nature Faker" is the most comprehensive book (it is on cd) that i have ever seen.  It is amazing the amount of information that they were able to compile.

You can PM Wayne Morrison for information.  $75.

In the event Santa isn't prepared to bring you the "Evangelist of Golf" or "The Confidential Guide"...

Here are a few recent lists of golf books courtesy of the magazines. Depending on the list, the books recommended may be newly published or an older favorite.

Here you go, Brad.

Just picked this up on Amazon. Looks great, thanks for the recommendation.

I read this last month when traveling. A really fun, light read. I would highly recommend.

I ordered a copy of the Pete Dye book signed by Pete himself, via Joel Zuckerman's website.

Better check with him though as last I heard there was an extremely limited supply.

While not strictly design related (there is a decent amount of design history in the book) and just on the market, Dobby's England's Finest Links (Royal Cinque Ports) is so far a very interesting club history.  I would recommend it.

Just came across this one on the ASGCA web site

Secrets of the Great Golf Course Architects
Price: $20.00 U.S.

This collection of personal stories from the game’s most renowned architects sheds light on the wide range of situations a golf course architect encounters in their career. No longer do people need wonder what exactly it is that golf course architects do. This book lays it out for them in a heartfelt and often amusing way.

This isn't new, but I was surprised to see such a low price for this one.

At those prices, the book is a steal...I'd pay a helluva lot more for it.

I sincerely mean no disrespect to the authors of what I'm sure is a well-written and interesting work, but . . .

Is there no one else who sees the comedy in a five-volume work . . . on CD . . . concerning a golf course architect . . . called "The Nature Faker"?

The marketing strategy is so counterintuitive, it just might work.

Kalen,

I bought that book (in like new condition) on Ebay about a month ago for $10. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

This one felt good in the hand today: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/golf-stories-charles-mcgrath/1100742787?ean=9780307596895&itm=1&usri=charles+mcgrath

From the publisher (I think): "Golf Stories is a wonderful gathering of short fiction about the famously addictive pastime.

"Here are literary classics by such golf-loving writers as P. G. Wodehouse, Ring Lardner, and John Updike, mixed with surprises like an appearance by Ian Fleming’s James Bond and a little crime on the links from mystery master Ian Rankin. Humorists and sportswriters ranging from E. C. Bentley to Dan Jenkins and Rick Reilly weigh in as well, alongside a tale of romance on the greens from F. Scott Fitzgerald, a little-known gem by famous golf architect A. W. Tillinghast, and a story by Rex Lardner (Ring’s nephew) that just may be the single funniest thing ever written about golf. The resulting anthology is as enticing, provocative, and entertaining as the game of golf itself."

Of course, it's not too early to pre-order "From Fields to Fairways: The Classic Golf Clubs of Minnesota" (due out next spring) by our own Rick Shefchik. As the possessor of a proof of the book, I'm well-qualified to tell you that it's a steal at $26.10 from Barnes & Noble, if you have any interest in the golf courses of Minnesota. Cf. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/from-fields-to-fairways?store=ALLPRODUCTS&keyword=from+fields+to+fairways

Thanks for the shout-out, Eric..much appreciated!

Books signed by Pete and personally inscribed by me aren't a bargain along the lines of what everyone is mentioning on this thread..not by any means.  But--They do tend to go up in value, and will only continue to be worth more as time ticks by.

If anyone is interested in these special edition books (or--non-special edition) just PM me, and I will supply the relevant details.
