What's the best sub-6500 yard golf course in America?

What's the best golf course in the United States that does not stretch longer than 6500 yards? Merion used to be under 6500 yards, but I believe now with the new 2013 US Open tees the course is now over ~6800 yards from the tips. Chicago Golf Club and Shoreacres are now over 6500 with new tees built within the last 10 years. Cypress Point comes in at slightly over 6500 yards.

Good question.

Fishers Island and Maidstone were both under 6500 yards the last time I saw them, but that was a few years ago.

Played Crystal Downs this afternoon -- it's 23 yards too long to win this discussion.

Good question.  Don't you think it is possible there are more good courses under 6500 than over 6500 in the US?  Out of 16000 golf courses I would think there might be more well kept , regionally known 6500 and under courses than there are well known championship courses.  Is Palmetto under 6500?

Such an arbitrary number. CPC is 6,537. Pasatiempo before the newest tees was 6,500 on the nose. Eastward Ho is 6,356.

The best 6500 yard golf course in America is the same as the best golf course in America for 95% of the golfing population.

It really is an arbitrary question.
Palmetto for example has tees that stretch it to 6700 yards according to the scorecard, but I've been a member there for 15 years and played there for 34 years and I've never played it over 6400 yards.
The "new" tees are NEVER in use. (i.e. they never have markers on them and I respect where the super sets them)
perhaps they use them for the Palmetto Amateur

I always get a kick out of players who brag about how long their course is. then play two sets of tees up.
These are the same guys who claim to hit their 8 irons 150 and their drivers 250, but actually carry it about 170.
One of the reasons I've objected to the hotter balls/clubs is that it really has exaggerated the distance difference between the good players and the bad players, creating the perceived need for multiple tees

Southampton could be in the running for best course under 6500 along with Cape Arundel (which could win best under 6000-along with Aiken GC)

According to Wexler's Private Golf Club Guide Fisher's Island is 6566 yards. Maidstone, however, is 6403 according to the same book.

I think the equally interesting question is what new (say post 1960) golf courses were designed to play under 6500 yards.  I'm sure there are several examples, but in the post-modern era the only one I can think of is Easthampton.

Angela has gotten quite the intro to American golf on this trip!  Though as I told her, the golf we played out in Oregon wasn't exactly "American" golf!

I haven't gotten much GCA time in the last few days after the golf trip, as I have been at a wedding, but I'd say that this question intrigues me as much as any on the DG in quite awhile.  I am always surprised at how much variety a course of 6000-6500yds can provide for any level of golfer, and how often it still allows you to hit driver.  I don't buy the argument from the retail golfer that a 6200 yard course takes the driver out of the player's hands.  Though it may not always be the best play.

Intrigues me too.
Take a par 70 course with four two long par threes and two good shorter par threes, three or four good short par fours and two short penal par fives and mix it together.  And if the course has drives landing in slightly uphill ( running perpendicular to the topo lines)you could be playing a course that feels like 7200 yards and it could easily be under 6500 yards.  Plus a par 70 course is much more difficult to par for the good player than a par 72 normally.  
Why don't you do an exercise and see who can come up with the best aggregate course with a par of 70 and have the shortest length. ;D
