There are good ones. There is a 6,250 Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek course at the Cranwell resort in Lenox, Mass, built in 1926. Short in spots but plays longer. Not a great course but very sporty. And the answer to the question on the Aiken Golf Club is 6,048. And Bala in Fairmount Park in Philly is way under. It is a par 68 and is filled with wonderful short par 4s. there is length in the par 3s, There are 2 short 5s. Excellent course if you can wrap your head around a par 68. The course is under 6,000 yards. You might get bored playing it every day but it is a fun play.

White Bear Yacht Club hosted this year's Minnesota State Amateur Championship at 6,471 yards.   And I would say that it held it's own pretty well against a talented young group this year.

I have not seen Eastward Ho or Myopia but if they are better than WBYC then they would definitely be near the top of my list of courses I need to play.

WBYC is really special.

Broadmoor Golf Club- A Vernon Macan design, it says 6,186 yards on the website.  I thought we played a set at around 6,400 yards.  All I know it seemed like the longest 6,400 yards I have ever played.  A pretty good golf course.

Redlands Country Club- It is 6,276 yard Par 70.  This is a pretty stout short golf course also.  Norman MacBeth

Am also suprised no on has mentioned
Bel Air Country Club-  At 6482 yards, this has to be a top 5 course under 6,500 yards    George Thomas

The Golf Association of Philadelphia has four courses that I think fit this description to a tee...
1. West Course at Merion GC (not sure of the total yardage but I know it's quite a bit less than 6,500)
2. Torresdale-Frankford CC (6,381 yards - Donald Ross)
3. Riverton CC (6,490 - Donald Ross)

Chris,

I could be wrong but I thought that the West Course at Merion was actually under 6000 yards?

Jeff wasn't too far off.

Wait ten years for this survey, and then they all will be - for nine holes. :D

Good find Howard. I searched but didn't find anything. It's an interesting comparison to this thread only 7 years later.

Pasatiempo seems to be 6,500 on the dot, so I guess it doesn't qualify for this discussion.

http://www.pasatiempo.com/web/golfinfo_scorecard.php

But, I've always thought of it as one of the hardest golf courses I have played for the yardage.

Tobacco Road is 54 yards too long for this discussion.

However, it must be a contender for any "pound-for-pound" ranking on yardage/slope:

Slope:     150
Yardage: 6,554

Myopia is a touch over 6500...6539, not including a couple extra tees pushing it over 6600.

But Essex County Club is 6401!

I think ECC is stronger than Eastward Ho.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I hate to be a complete homer, but I have to think that Camden Country Club deserves a mention in this list.

We do have a couple of weak holes, but:

1)  When we hosted a final stage qualifier for the US Am, we were the only site where even qualified.  At Camden, even was Medalist, +2 qualified.  (the USGA played the RR tracks as an obstruction rather than OB).

2)  The course has held up very well for 50+ years for the Carolinas Fourball.

In addition, it's a wonderful course to play every day.

I wouldn't say it's the BEST, but I think it deserves mention!

(bias alert) i will nominate Montclair Golf Club 2nd and 3rd nines - 6500 exactly from the back

Keith,

I was going to nominate Montclair as well.

I believe that Bobby Jones called it the longest short course in America.

Preakness Hills would probably qualify as well, although recently, additional yardage was added.

If I may, I would like to nominate my home town club--Keene CC --here in the Granite State-- Founded in 1899 with the total redo by Wayne Stiles in 1923( check out their website for a good walking tour) , it measures 6187 yds. from the tips, most play is from less than 6000, it will give you all you can handle.Francis Ouimet stated that it was the toughest " short" course he had ever seen. Small greens (fast) , elevation changes, tight fairways and one must be accurate. The 18th (288 yd. 4 par) , tight and downhill ,flanked by trees left and ob right and behind green is considered by many to be the most exciting finishing hole in New England. I know that's a bold statement but you would really have to see it to understand.

We conduct the Keene City Championship every July and the other course used is Bretwood and that plays at 7000 and has hosted numerous State Opens and USGA Quakifiers. The scoring average every year for the past 30 years has Keene CC playing a shot , shot and a half tougher than Bretwood. We use both courses every year. You must bring your A game to play Keene CC well.

Agreed.

No doubt in my mind.

I'll also add Essex County into the mix although I am willing to bet nobody would imagine it plays under 6500 yards from the back tees if they didn't know.
