Does anyone know how much play it gets?  Presumably most of the memebrship are wel healed and live off the island, meaning it's their second club?

Tony,

Most of the play is in the summer, by members who spend the summer on the island.

Play numbers as I understand them in a rounds-per-year sense are low by popular standards, but for the three months or so at the height of the season likely as high as anywhere, if that makes sense.

Of course we have an authority on the topic among us who may chime in.

Jim- This is not the only proposed 2nd course that sadly never came to fruition at the most capable hands of Mr. Raynor. When walking down the hallway in the Yale clubhouse to Widdy`s bar and restaurant there hangs a proposed routing of two courses on the land encompassing over 700 acres that was was donated in 1924.  I don`t think that I ever make the walk and don`t stop to gander at what would have arguably been one of the world`s greatest 36 holes.  I don`t mean to threadjack but this comes immediately to mind when discussions ensue about 2nd courses that were never built. The real shame is that the remaining property is pristine in it`s land forms and surrounds and has remained virtually untouched. Those that are familiar with the City of New Haven marvel that this land actually sits within it`s confines. Not a 1/4 mile away is a land locked and densely populated area.

As I recall, Yeaman's Hall was originally planned to have 36 Raynor holes.

Riviera CC was also to have a 2nd 18.  It is now a middle school.  I think I have seen a George Thomas routing, but I cannot say for sure.  If there is a routing, it is very preliminary as he mulled over the current course with multiple routings.

Thanks for the info on the second course.  I assume Raynor would have built templates there as well.  Might have had two world-class template courses at the same club, inviting all sorts of comparisons between the two. 

Can anyone comment on the site for the second course?  Does it look as spectacular as Peper says in his article?

I may be wrong but I seem to recall that Raynor actually prepared 3 routings on different parts of the island, and the founders chose the present site. I think this info was in the club's centennial anniversary book, which I read but do not have.

I have seen the proposed routing before. I haven't walked around that part of the island but it is pretty hard to imagine that the land would be "more varied and spectacular" than the existing course. As I remember it the course would be on just down the island from the present course and part of it would have been where the driving range is. I don't know how far it is across the island at that point, but certainly some holes would have had to traverse some pretty bland land. Donnie or George would be better judges of this than me.
