Hello gents, well some of you may be familiar with Old Head but il give you a very brief run down of the course since it opened in June 1997.Construction began in 1989 and the course was designed and constructed by a unique team Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan,Eddie Hackett, Liam Higgins and Dr. Joe Carr .The course and practice ground occupy 180 acres with the remaing 40 acres taking up the cliff face surrounding the headland.I have never had the pleasure of meeting Mr Doak but i believe he was involved with the project in the early days at Old Head.Originally there was 40 different routings put forward to the owners and eventually they settled with the current 2 loops of 9 bringing you back to the clubhouse. The biggest obstacle at Old Head was getting the grass to grow and up until very recent years we used lose up to 4 greens every winter along with some areas of fairway on the exposed holes on the West side of the headland. Since opening in 1997 every hole has been tweaked in one way or another with quite alot of changes over the last 4 years.Ron Kirby put the finishing touches on the course and still visits Old Head every year to look at different changes that may be pursued or have a look at the work that we have carried out ourselves onsite. The course has evolved over the last 14 years and in my opinion it is getting better every season as it is matures .Old Head is a Golf Club with 410 members, almost 70% are from North America with Boston and New York having more than their fair share,This season we will put trough 17,500 rounds approx from April 14th to the 31st of October as the course closes completly throughout the winter. As for the "charm" of Old Head I believe it is the most beautiful and most spectacular setting in the world for a golf course but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I am delighted to be a part of the group and im sure i'll get great enjoyment out of the site.
Danny
