I have been very fortunate to play alot of the great course of the world and I look forward contributing my opinions and thoughts with the group.Having been a long term fan of this site i was delighted when Ran accepted my email to join the group ,I know a few of you may not be the biggest fans of my home club so i promise not to attack at every oppurtunity :) .

Danny welcome, having famously been to Australia six times but yet to make Ireland (from Kent) I'm always keen to hear what I'm missing out on!

Whilst Old Head does seem to draw conflicting opinions on this site, certainly lots of Deal members have played there and all rave about the overall experience.

I was at Swinley yesterday and as always it was a fabulous experience of pure golf and tranquility.

Danny

Most welcome, next time in Ireland I must venture further South and experience your great resort, alas without the golf.

Looking forward to your thought and opinions as a golfing man and those when you are wearing with your Director of Golf hat.

I am certain you will have some interesting experiences which I hope you will share with the rest of us poor golfing nuts.

Danny,

Welcome to the board.  I also love Old Head and spend quite a bit of time in Kenmare when I can jump across the pond.  Look forward to meeting up in the future.

Danny,

Welcome to the nuthouse.  I have a friend here in Chicago who is named Danny Brassil.  We just might have to come across the pond and spill a pint or three together!

Danny,

I am sure you have lurked on this site for sometime before deciding to join. As you may know several people have expressed some issues with Old Head that does not paint it in the best light.  I would love to hear your opinion so we can balance the facts and decide for ourselves if we would want to make the effort to visit.  Here is an interesting exchange on a thread titled "Worst Course you have ever played".

Nigel Walton - Relative to its potential? Old Head.

Tom Huckaby -

Nigel:

Maybe you're right re Old Head being terrible relative to its potential... and others smarter than me have commented on architectural deficiencies... but man if that is a "bad" golf course than I want to see the good ones.  "Spectacular" does not do justice to the views, and there are enough thrilling shots to keep me happy without a doubt.  Yes, the cost is way too high and it's appalling to me how they treat the locals... But that is one fun golf course.

TH

Please, if you may, could you address Nigel's concern that the design failed to reach it's potential and Huckaby's that it is appalling how you treat the locals.  I have never seen the course or visited your fine country so am unfamiliar with both the site and the accepted culture for treating townies.   Thank you, a link to the original thread follows:

Hello gents, well some of you may be familiar with Old Head but il give you a very brief run down of the course since it opened in June 1997.Construction began in 1989 and the course was designed and constructed by a unique team Ron Kirby, Paddy Merrigan,Eddie Hackett, Liam Higgins and  Dr. Joe Carr .The course and practice ground occupy 180 acres with the remaing 40 acres taking up the cliff face surrounding the headland.I have never had the pleasure of meeting Mr Doak but i believe he was involved with the project in the early days at Old Head.Originally there was 40 different routings put forward to the owners and eventually they settled with the current 2 loops of 9 bringing you back to the clubhouse. The biggest obstacle at Old Head was getting the grass to grow and up until very recent years we used lose up to 4 greens every winter along with some areas of fairway on the exposed holes on the West side of the headland. Since opening in 1997 every hole has been tweaked in one way or another with quite alot of changes over the last 4 years.Ron Kirby put the finishing touches on the course and still visits Old Head every year to look at different changes that may be pursued or have a look at the work that we have carried out ourselves onsite. The course has evolved over the last 14 years and in my opinion it is getting better every season as it is matures .Old Head is a Golf Club with 410 members, almost 70% are from North America with Boston and New York having more than their fair share,This season we will put trough 17,500 rounds approx from April 14th to the 31st of October as the course closes completly throughout the winter. As for the "charm" of Old Head I believe it is the most beautiful and most spectacular setting in the world for a golf course but as they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I am delighted to be a part of the group and im sure i'll get great enjoyment out of the site.

Welcome Danny
16 years is a long time on site - seeing it all must have been very cool.
How many walk when playing?
What customer services work well, what didn't?
What do you do differently?
Do you have the other routing plans?
Do you sit in your office much?
Do you hope to stay there for your entire career?
Cheers

Danny,

Thanks for the review.

I look forward to learning more about the course from you.  I would not be surprised if this discussion takes on a little life.

What do you think is the best or your favorite hole?  What do you think is the weakest and what would you do to improve it?

Hi Folks,  i will try and answer  some of your questions from the previous posts.
On the relationship with the locals......this has been in my opinion exagerrated and misleading to a huge extent.Without going into too much detail We do hold charity golf days and support local charities by means of golf round donations etc.We do hold a number of days thoughout the season for GUI (irish golf club members) members where the green fees are greatly reduced to give everybody a chance to play Old Head (roughly 10% of our membership are living or from Kinsale),in fact we have a number of weekly competitions between now and the end of October where GUI members can play for €60.I dont want to go too far into this topic so maybe some of the Irish board members would like to give their opinion. The Club also helps with local employment as well as bringing golf tourism to the area.I dont see any bad relations between the locals and the club infact to be honest i would think its the opposite.

How many walk when playing? about 90% with caddies
What customer services work well, what didn't? We have tried to balance world class 5*service with Irish Hospitality
What do you do differently?
Do you have the other routing plans? I can try and locate these
Do you sit in your office much? Nope except during periods of the winter when i am onsite and closed.
Do you hope to stay there for your entire career? Yes

My favourite hole is the 4th and least favourite is the 10th.

I am most certainly not a United fan (liverpool) .I am heading to Waterville for the next few days so will be off the air until next week. Thanks for all the interest and questions.

Danny - Welcome aboard.  Hope to meet you in person sometime in 2013 - if I'm lucky.  Old Head is on the bucket list.

Let me count myself as another GCA member who would be very interested in the routing plans and history of such a unique site.
