Most courses expected.

Now list 5 courses you might not see in Golf Digest.

Any five: R. Cinque Ports, Swinley Forest, R. Dornoch, North Berwick West Links, R. St George's.

Five lesser known/appreciated: Huntercombe, West Sussex, Golspie, Silloth-on-Solway, Burnham & Berrow.

And I may well enjoy the lesser known list more!

Not one vote for The New Course at St. Andrews???  Or Kingsbarn?  Both strong tracks IMHO.

Totally agree with Royal Dornoch and Prestwick. TOC is a lock due to its place in the history of the game. But i really thought Kingsbarn would get one vote.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

You don't see much of Rye in GOLF DIGEST, unless it's a passing mention of the President's Putter.  Nor St. Enodoc, or Pennard, or Royal West Norfolk, nor Royal Worlington & Newmarket.

I don't have five non-GD options to offer, but I thoroughly enjoyed both Elie and Lundin.  Lundin Links, especially, has many excellent holes (including 1, 4, 5, 10, 14 and the long, uphill 18th) and offers a nice mix of links and parkland golf with the ocean in sight.  Besides, and as I told my friends when planning our trip, which included TOC, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie, "We owe it to ourselves to play at least a couple of courses that the Scots themselves actually play!"

TOC, Ballybunion, Waterville (heard a lot of great comments about the changes made by Fazio), Muirfield, Portrush

Five lesser known: Dooks, Carne, Portrush Valley, Ballyliffin, Cork

My essential five:

North Berwick
Royal County Down
Royal Dornock

opinion based upon number of architectural lessons you can learn from a course

I don't know if these are "lesser known," but they wouldn't appear on a GD top 10 list:

1. Saunton
2. Nairn
3. St. George's Hill
4. Deal
5. Burnham & Berrow

Muirfield - conceptually perfect but less so after 8 kuMacmmels
Dornoch
Machrie
Cruden Bay

Five not in Golf Digest

Machrie
Rye
Woking (not seen)
The New Zealand Club
Royal Aberdeen

Salivating at the thought........

North Berwick- Sean, out of interest what holes do you think are weak?  Not saying I disagree (yet) but I am curious!
The Old Course
Royal Dornoch
Muirfield
Royal Portrush (Dunluce)

RCD is the equal of all these but that is my personal 5.

Simon

#s 1, 3, 5, 8 & 18 are all arguably less than good holes so this must add up to some weak stuff - or at least stuff that doesn't bring anything to the North Berwick table.

Ciao

Wow, thats more than I expected.  The makings of good debate!  Almost 1/3rd of the course that you dont think is that good, yet it is still in your top 5?

Care to elaborate on each hole as to why?  I have a couple in mind but non of them are the ones you mentioned.

S

2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

Five I'd like to see are

St Andrews New
Brora
Westward Ho!
Gleneagles Queens
And whatever the best most interesting club on Guernsey or Jersey, which I'd have to research a bit.

In no particular order and maybe not the best, but the most fun courses I've played and hope to get back to very soon...Deal, RCD, Lahinch, Alwoodley, Sunningdale Old, St. Enodoc.  Oops that's six!

In my neck of the woods around Inverness

1. Brahan GC close to Dingwall. Secluded setting, greens with lots of movement, length (3500 from the backs)
2. Portmahomack close to Tain. Links type which is loads of fun
3. Bonar Bridge. Great views and a solid course
4. Ullapool. Super links setting
5. Abernethy (Nethybridge) Really quirky course. Played this alot in my junior days

Even the average Brit has only heard of Royal Worlington & Newmarket. I can barely name 5 let alone 5 worth visiting.

9 Holers
Here's two that are worth a visit if going up to the Highlands;

Ballindalloch (not that far north of Boat of Garten and Granton-on-spey) - modern 9 holer designed by Tom MacKenzie which has two sets of tees so that you can play it as an 18 holer if you wish. Some nice elevational changes, some nicely contoured greens and one of the prettiest par 3's in Scotland.

Covesea (located in the next bay along from Lossiemouth) - used to be a 12 hole par 3 course but recently a lot of changes made to including rebuilding the greens and tees and joining some of the holes to make par 4's. Think of a miniature Cullen with seastacks to play over. Greens are small and with some big contours. A course you don't use a new ball at. Play with your practice balls and accept you'll lose a few. A real blast.

5 Course you won't find in Golf Digest

Hamilton - there are a number of really good Braid courses around Glasgow but Hamilton is one I wish I got to play a bit more often.

Troon Darley - most fun of any of the courses at Troon

Elgin - played it again last week and got no where near my handicap. A par 68 that gives you a mauling and yet its terrific fun at the same time. For those of you that haven't played it (that will be all but two of you  ;D ) its a bit like Rosemount but better.

Duff House Royal - what Dr MacKenzie did with a flat bit of land. All about the wonderful greens and particularly the two double greens, just fantastic. Not difficult but still full of interest. Everything the good Doctor talked about.

Carlisle - played in the height of summer, its an absolute joy. Bit of a heathland feel. Has one of the best short and unique par 3's ever. Well worth visiting for that alone.

Hi Niall,

have yet to play either Ballindalloch or Covesea but intend to pay both of them a visit in the next month or so.

Portsalon
Narin and Portnoo
Brora
Pennard
Perranporth

9 holers
Mulraney
Connemara Isles
Cruit (don't believe the nonsense you read about 1 good hole)
Carradale
Gweedore
4 of 5 in Ireland

Isle of Harris (haven't played it...yet)
Spanish Point-not all that great
Bushmills-just OK
