I had the great pleasure of playing Essex County Club this past week and I can say with enthusiasm that it is quite spectacular. It has been well documented in our profile here so I won't add too much more.

Thank you for the photo tour Frank.  Essex County Club seems to capture the charm and aura of the great English clubs.

In your picture of the 3rd hole green looking back, is that the bathtube-shaped depression on the right hand side of the green?  This green is said to be the oldest green in the country dating back to 1893.

It is taken from back left of the green around the 4th tee. The depression is actually on the left part of the green when facing it from the fairway.

This is my favourite Ross Course so far.
I think it's one of the finest grassing jobs that I have ever seen where every line matters to how it plays.
Kudos to Bruce Hepner for that and the continued clearing of trees.

The 11th and 6th greens are perfect examples of how to transition up a hill and make something that's bloody hard, look relatively friendly by using longer grades to hide the elevation.

The place is super cool!

The stretch from 10-13 look unbelievable. Call me a sucker for blind shots and land movement, but I really, really want to hit that tee shot on 10.

Thanks for posting, Frank.

JLahrman: It was definitely a lot of fun to play. It would be a great course to be a member of as you would never get bored.

Jeff: NP. I just wish I had more opportunity to take better pictures while I was there.

Wow.  I grew up playing New England courses where every hole was lined with trees, and thought that was how all parkland courses, including very good ones, were set up.  [My current home course, in DC, is about as tree-lined as it gets.]  As I've learned, that was a big mistake, and courses and threads like this one hammer that point home.

Does anyone see a little Merion in some of the pics?

Yes, exactly what I thought with respect to several holes in the photo tour.

Without a doubt one of the coolest photo tours I have seen on this website.
the interviewer asked beck how he felt "being the bob dylan of the 90's" and beck quitely responded "i actually feel more like the bon jovi of the 60's"

Frank,

I need to adjust some courses in my "need to play" listing.

Thanks for an awesome tour.   Essex looks wonderful, with elements of Garden City and their low-profile greens, as well.

Matt- Frank has a great eye and some of these photos almost look like paintings. Very cool indeed.

Reminds me of another course in the neighborhood, Myopia Hunt Club.

Great tour!  Thanks again Frank!

Great Pics Frank. Along with Eastward Ho you've captured Two of my favorite courses in one week.

You definitely need to trust your caddy first time playing Essex. Some of the lines they give have you scratching your head until you find your ball in the middle of the fairway after hitting where they said.

Burr: Eastward Ho and Essex have both vaulted their way into some of my favorite courses around the world. As much as Essex is fun, I have to say Eastward Ho was even more so....love them both.
