Kinloch is the best.

"Having just played Kinloch for the first time I can honestly say this is the # 1 golf course in New Zealand. For those unable to play the great links courses of Scotland, Kinloch compares with the best of them."

Hmmm it is common for players to be complmentary when visiting courses. Just look at Greg Norman at Hillside and Gary Player everywhere.

Kinloch is a fine course but the par 3 third is more TPC than links and the par 5 eight has a flawed approach from the left side. If Sir Bob wants a true links experience he only needs to travel as far as Paraparaumu Beach rather than Scotland.

Sir Bob said the same thing about Prairie Dunes at the Senior US Open a few years back. He's got a little Gary Player in him.

Except he was right about PD.

Kinloch is a fine course.  Hard as hell, on fantastic land and a tough but very doable walk.  Not very links-like though and a little over the top in places.  If you're in the Lake Taupo area I'd play it over Wairakei.

I'd definitely put it behind Cape Kidnappers and Paraparaumu but I liked it better than Kauri Cliffs.

David I really enjoyed Kinloch and it is a very fine course, I just think comparing it to a true links is like saying driving a souped up Mini gives you a Ferrari experience. Like you I'd play it over Wairakei but you have to drag me away from the coast. I could spend a day just playing the 16th at Paraparaumu.

Although the question could be is Kinloch is the best JN course... (it's miles ahead of the one I played yesterday at Spring City)

In my opinion Kinloch is a fine course but it is not a links.

I really enjoyed the tee to green challenge but find the contouring of the greens to severe in many cases considering the demands of the shots into the greens.

That is the same ordering the world golf rankings mentioned in the article has them.

Interesting. It is the first time I have seen anyone call it best in New Zealand. How does it fit into the Lord of the Rings discussion above.
