What hole did you like the most the first time you played TOC?

12 hands down for me. I had seen nothing like it before or since.

12 - it was playing into the wind and the caddy gave me a line way to the right near gorse.  I did not know anything about the hole and thought he was nuts but followed direction.  It was magic to suddenly see those giant bunkers.

13, ton of strategy, and into a prevailing wind, two very well struck balls are needed.

There's also a great line to up or down pins from that angle.  My favorite Old Course caddy gives that line off the tee too.

My favorite hole on the Old Course is 14, tacking my way around Hell.

Kalen,

17 is my favorite in the world...but I knew it going in.  17 and 18 kind of go without saying, IMHO

17 for me, but its actually hard to beat the overall feeling and ambiance of standing on the first tee at TOC.

I think I must include the 1st Hole on TOC, it has a wonderful start, reminding one of all that has gone on before and I have had or seen much amusement at the Silken Burn that at times have made that hole most enjoyable. Perhaps it’s just me and the echoes of history I hear every time I get close to TOC. But still the thrill factor makes it one of the best IMHO.

Center line bunkers...NASTY bunkers at that.

Good contours on the green.

Interesting angles to take/options...on distance and angles, frankly.

Add in the wind.  BABY!!

But 14 is SWEET!!  17 is awesome.  11 is kick ass.  Amazing course.

I like the sneeky hidden bunker. I always play with a kid who takes it over the OB and brings it back off the tee. Neet to watch. I have putted from the 17th tee box before. Good pick to recognize the nonobvious.

The first, on my first and only visit after a rather heavy R&A lunch and muchos Kummel I hit the pin with my second shot.

Melvyn,
Silken Burn? Did they rename the Swilcan Burn or did auto-spellcheck do you in?

When I first read the title I immediately thought of #9, not because it's crazy remarkable but because it was "all right there in front of me" -- for the first time in the round.  Capitalizing on it by driving the green was all the more special.

#9 really? I would have figured that would be the consensus least liked hole on TOC.  Did you really not like some of the blindness on the front nine that much?

For my it is #11. So much history there, so influential and so damn challenging.  It has the potential to be a round killer but a par there feels really good.

I first played The Old Course in 1984. From then on I have always said that if I could hit only one more tee shot in my life, I want one last crack at the tee shot on the Road Hole. #17 for me.

Spelling error it should of course read Swilken or can be Swilkan from the 1930's Uni photo or it can be spelt Swilkin from the 1836 Chalmers course map. But to most to us its Swilken. Blame the spelling error with either i or a on to the West Coast players who had a wee problem with Swilken after a dram or two.
