Pebble Beach in the Winter
« on: September 19, 2011, 03:14:18 PM »
I will be in Monterey over the Christmas holidays, and I was wondering if anyone has experience playing the course that time of year.  How are the conditions/weather?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

I have been there over the holidays a few times.  The courses are generally very soft and the weather ranges from nice to cool with a fair amount of rain.

Not the ideal time to visit but very enjoyable if you are coming from a Minnesota winter.

I was in Carmel shortly before Christmas.  I was talking with someone about how slow it was at Pebble.  He told me the 23rd and 24th are very slow, but starting around 10 AM on the 25th it becomes very crowded.  Obviously the same could be said for the 26th through 31st.

I agree, I left on the 23rd and walking along the beach in Carmel, I saw no one on the course.
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Cliff, It really is hit or miss that time of year. Usually, the weather is fine. This year might be an exception with the early winter forecasted. If it's not important to you to have a tee time, it would be worth trying to get to the pro shop very early and get on the waiting list. Or, see if they have that 24 hour window where you can call in and get a tee time without staying at the hotel.

I played PB on Christmas day in shorts and a wind breaker.

  Cliff,

I actually got to play it 5 days in a row over one Christmas. If you stay on property you can get a tee time.

Thanks for the input.  I won't be staying at the hotel, so I will have some flexibility on the days to watch the weather.

I have not played Pebble at Christmas but have played its neighbors just up the road in absolutely wonderful weather. The worst weather is found in January and February, March is not much fun either. This year, June through the beginning of September, was the foggiest summer since 1989 and at times I was wearing a couple of sweaters. Hang around for a day or two and you may well get lucky.

Of course Anthony likes to play with frozen ballls. 8)

We are having a late summer this year in No. Cal. so maybe winter will start later too! Christmas week might just be perfect.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

The weather that time of year can be really good- not quite into the rainy season. I've played on the peninsula throughout the season. But, as others have suggested, the pace of play is terrible.  It's a death march most of the time out there unless you go off as early as possible. Sadly, Pebble represents both the best and the worst of American golf. Best- unbelievable coastline and many fine golf holes. Worst- they charge all the traffic will bear and then add 25%, and virtually encourage slow play because of the cost. If you have a caddie, you'll get the full show- reading everything, maybe a demo shot here and there, etc- got to earn that big fee and tip! So, if you've never played it, bring money and be forewarned. Of course, there are worse places to be stranded for 6 hours!

Bob Adam and Lynn know. I do think it is always smart to have your golf tee times nailed down. The area is so great why waist time hanging around for your spot on the waiting list. The weather is hit and miss then, but I will say many a rainy day there would not stop anyone from playing golf. Also many times it is cloudy and misty but only an hours worth of rain actually falls.

There is no way of knowing what the weather will be like then. It could be sunny, with temps in the 60's for a week or it could rain every day you are there. December in Monterey is typically the 4th wettest month of the year, with an average rainfall of 2.7 inches.

If I recall correctly, the rainfall in Northern California this past December was at least twice the monthly average.
