looks a little too busy (the green complex) when compared to scale of surrounds. IMHO

Pete:

Any reason you chose to display the view from the right rough?  Do you have a shot from the fairway?

I do.  It looks like the optimal line of play ISN'T from the right rough.  Also, I have a feeling that there is more green to play to than it appears.

Tim,
The reason I shot the photo from the right rough is, that is where my ball was. (nice jab at my golf game);) I don't have a shot from the fairway, That was Goodale's job.

John,
Yes, there was much green to work with as well as large chipping areas or run ups (which made the greens huge).

Pete,
What did you think of Stevinson Ranch?

Okay.

My impression?  It almosts looks like you could set up a tee and play the hole as a par 3 in the line of approach you captured.  It looks like it calls for a well crafted high fade, the kind of shot I can hit only when I'm playing near the top of my form.  So, in that sense I like it.........but I'm still having trouble imagining the shot from the fairway.  That might not be as good.

It sort of looks like (to me) that some of those areas might be better served as grassy collection areas for chipping, rather thatn as bunkers.  Actually...it kind of looks like some of those bunkers WERE infact cut out of previous collection areas...just my impression.

I also feel that, at least from this vantage point that things are a bit busy, with all of the up-font mounding and bunkers...but as JohnC says, there may in fact be "more than meets the eye" in terms of putting surface and run-up area than we can actually see here in this image.

Ed,
I liked the absence of trees. Yesterday was cold and still with high fog. I think the course would be better evaluated with some wind, not the 30-40 mph horror stories I've heard about, but some, which would have brought the surrounds into play. It has a solid redan at 206 yards. My favorite hole was the "Alps". I have never seen the original, but this one was strategic, challenging and interesting. It's winter so the course was too soft for the runup, but with firm, fast and windy conditions, it would be a great test. Stevinson has 3 great par 3's, the first being the weakest. Green surfaces were interesting, runups made them huge, though I only 3 putted once. With four sets of tees it's all the golf course you could ask for, though at 7000 yds. it's too much for me. 6600 is comfortable. I would like to have more movement in the fairways to create a little "whimsey" and watch the ball roll around. I'd like to go back in the spring or fall when it plays the way it should, though I think I'll avoid the valley summer when temps top 100 degrees.

Pete,
Avoid mosquito season when you go back. Is that picture #6 (the par 5) at Stevinson? Definitely not the recommended line. ;)
