What is with these UK Golfers
« on: September 10, 2011, 07:34:35 PM »
A couple of years ago, I met Mark Pearce at TOC and, playing off a 12 he singed the old lady for 3 birdies and a fine round.  Today, I had the pleasure of playing TOC with Brian Sheehy.  And, what does he do but have three birdies on the way to a 77 (playing off a 10).  Here is a picture of the template student firing, successfully, at a far back Eden pin poisition. (ooops, a little fuzzy or was it really that misty or maybe it was the RAF strafing us from the air show)

But then I had an eagle and a birdie in a fine round that would have been better without a visit to a gorse bush and a visit to Hell.

OK, Here's a better picture of Eden, sadly lacking Brian in the pic, but after I'd calmed down after dumping my tee shot into Strath Bunkey.  That was a tough pin position.

Bryan,
you're up WAY too late to turn in a good performance tomorrow!!! ;) Hope there's a wee dram or two aboard. There certainly is here!!
Glad you enjoyed the Auld Lass despite the inconvenience of the RAF!!! Sorry, I couldn't be there...St A on an airshow day can be spectacular.
v best,

Gadzooks, is the Eden not the most beautiful par 3 on earth, CPC not withstanding?

No, the most beautiful par 3 on Earth is definitely at CPC.  I'm just not sure it's the 16th, though.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

15 or 16, pick one.  But I do love that Eden with the estuary behind and looking quite benign!

Now you see what we members of Team USA deal with every year in the Buda Cup!

Bill,

Yes, I remember.  I was at the Buda at Lundin Links and Elie, and I remember vividly getting torched by Ian Dickson and Conrad, especially Conrad, the 15 capper who shot 74.  :o  But, then we did beat Mark at Elie, so it evened out. :)

Brian,

To be clear, only the fifth was played from the forward tees.  All the rest were regular tees.  And, I do't care, because it was still an eagle on my card.

You forgot to mention that we played pure Melvin gawf at Lundin.  No card, no yardages, just playing by feel.  Sadly, the techno clubs and balls didn't seem to obsolete the course for us.

Brian,

Two things contributed to your feeling about 17 tee.  One is that the tee was on the far left of the blocks which affects the line. Check the yardage book.  Our tee that day was directly left of the the yellow dot where the tee block extends further left.  The yardage is the same, but the angle is different. The second is that the caddie gave you the church steeple line which is the very safe line.  Of course you pulled it left of there and ended up almost in the second fairway.  Even from those tees, hitting it over the "O" in Old would have got you the centre of the fairway.  I cut my drive over the left corner of the building and it probably came down over that line and I was in the centre of the fairway.  There was certainly more room to the right edge of the fairway.

Also remember that the yellow tees they make you play are less than 6400 yards - no doubt to speed play, so that makes some holes feel short.

As to 16, the yardage book lists the carry as 192 yards from the yellow tees, so carrying it was no great issue, even into the wind.  Of course, modern technology has no doubt impacted how it comes into play, but not because the tees were up that day.

If your putting was on that day, you would have been very near par.  That sounds like a very pure day to me.   ;D
