This is a link to the Grantland Rice article - in .pdf format.
It looks like something some of you may enjoy.
http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/AmericanGolfer/1934/ag3710m.pdf

I found the article through this link:
http://search.la84foundation.org/search?site=default_collection&client=default_frontend&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=default_frontend&proxycustom=%3CHOME/%3E

The LA84 Foundation has a huge library online.  Among the magazines they have posted are "American Golfer" (1908-1935) and "Golf Illustrated & Outdoor America" (1914-1928).
This may have been posted on GCA before - but I haven't run across it.

It would be interesting to write a similar article today, except that so many of the players would feel compelled to vote for their own designs.

I don't know, but
Chris,
your use of a photo of the 'Golden Age' Drambuie bottle as your avatar rather than the NEW 'improved' design speaks volumes!!! First they did away with the cork and went to a screw top then they changed the whole design. Heathens - I bet they prefer Rees over MacK...
Still a lovely wee drammie on the golf course of a chilly morn though.

Chris,
Thanks, a nice resource.. the link as well as Drambuie!

I must admit that the first thing I noticed was your now "olde worlde" avatar.  Like Martin I deplore the new, advanced Drambuie profile it should be "...cryit doon...". It sucks .......but then that's not a bad thing to do on a Drambuie bottle.

Cheers Colin

My Dear Cousins, yes the modern ways are not always the best ways - golf and otherwise.

Hmm, oh yeah, golf.  That LA84 library really is quite something. There are no doubt innumerable great photos on there. Here are a few I got from a Lido article.

LA84 has a great collection including being one of very few to have Pacific Golf & Motor, which has wonderful articles including a bunch by George C. Thomas about his courses. Sadly, it's not on the list that they've digitized, but I really hope they add it. It's very hard to get one's hands on those articles.
